Josh Sperling Commissioned Wall Installation

Josh Sperling recently made a great case for living with art with a new installation featuring his signature geometric forms. The project was especially challenging because each squiggle was constructed to perfectly fit the 16 degree curve of the wall. The commissioned piece was apparently arranged by Sorry We’re Closed in Brussels and mirrors some of the large site specific wall hangings the New York-based artist creates for his exhibitions. Previews: Josh Sperling – “Big Time” @ Perrotin (New York)

Right on the heels of his showing just at the end of last year at Perrotin Seoul, Josh Sperling opened a new exhibition tonight at the gallery’s New York location. Big Time once again continues his exploration of geometric forms and can can be considered somewhat of a homecoming for the American artist as he lives and works in Ithaca. Created on shaped canvases, Sperlings expressive squiggles, angular shapes, and sinuous curves combine to form clusters of works that are oftentimes informed by the architecture in which it is […]

For his first showing in Asia that is on view through the end of the year, Josh Sperling has unveiled a selection of his signature geometric forms executed on a series of shaped canvases. Entitled Two Purple Tigers, the exhibition from the American artist at Perrotin Gallery’s Seoul branch explores the sculptural potential of painting. Drawing from influences that range from Googie-style signs to the Memphis furniture trend of the 1980s to Keith Haring’s figures, the bold angular shapes and sinuous curves of the upstate New York-based artist intrigues […]

Recap: Josh Sperling & Sam Friedman – “From the Cradle to the Grave” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

In January, Joshua Liner Gallery hosted a great dual exhibition from New York artists Josh Sperling & Sam Friedman. Entitled From the Cradle to the Grave, this showcase put together two lifelong friends with roots spanning to their youthful days. Evoking influences of postwar masters Frank Stella and Ellsworth Kelly, both Friedman and Sperling’s works explore the impacts of visual perception and movement. As seen in their contrasting styles, both artists push the boundaries with bold color combinations, high contrast, and structure. For Sperling, we were intrigued by the structured canvases […]

Previews: Sam Friedman & Josh Sperling – “From the Cradle to the Grave” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Tomorrow night (January 7th) at the Joshua Liner Gallery, a joint exhibition from Sam Friedman & Josh Sperling will open its doors to the public. Friedman will be be presenting his abstractions inspired by the natural world, continuing his series of grayscale works which we quite like, along with introducing some more hued paintings. In contrast to this, Sperling will be contributing some canvas pieces that are almost like sculptures with his layered plywood technique as well as a wall installation. The title of the show, From the […]
