Openings: Shawn Barber – “Tattooed Portraits: Chronicle” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

AM attended the opening of Shawn Barber’s (featured) solo show – “Tattooed Portraits: Chronicle” at Joshua Liner Gallery a couple weeks ago. The ever-talented tattoo master created a new series of works based on various on the tattooing paraphernalia and portraiture of his friends. The intense paintings looked radiant in our interview with Shawn and in person, and they seem to jump out at the viewers. The body of work is quite large as Shawn took it upon himself to fill the entire gallery. It’s always […]

As his upcoming show at NYC’s Joshua Liner gallery quickly approaches in just a couple weeks, Shawn Barber (featured) recently sat down with AM for a quick discussion on the art of getting, giving and painting tattoos. Openings: Barnstormers @ Joshua Liner Gallery

The beautiful weather and the promise of great art seemingly brought out all the five boroughs Thursday night for the opening of the Barnstormers show at Joshua Liner Gallery. The exhibition – which was so large that it overflowed Liner’s third floor space into an entire other gallery on the floor below – leaned toward presenting individual works from the diverse group of artists, instead of toward collaborative installations as expected. Of course, pieces by stars of the original scene such as David Ellis, Swoon, […]

Preview: The Barnstormers @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Preview images from the much anticipated Barnstormers show at Joshua Liner Gallery have started leaking out and from the looks of the individual pieces from Swoon, David Ellis, Kenji Hirata and others, the exhibition is not surprisingly going to be a stunner. But when all the amazing artists that make up the Barnstormers are together in one place, the total will undoubtedly be so much more than just the sum of the individual pieces. What exactly the end result will look like is anyone’s guess […]

This […]

Toronto-based artist Tristram Lansdowne (featured) opens his New York – and United States – solo debut “Refuge” this coming Saturday, February 13th, at Joshua Liner Gallery in the heart of Chelsea.  The exhibition follows his recent solo show with LE Gallery in Toronto last year (see our coverage here) and we’re definitely enjoying Tristram’s vision of the defaced and derelict, along with the surprises that may lie within or beneath the surface. AM caught up with Tristram and put some questions to him ahead of the […]

We recently stopped by Hiro Kurata’s studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, to get a sneak peak of what he’s been working on for his upcoming two-person show with Tat Ito (featured), entitled “From Kojiki To Modern Heroism,” which opens February 13 at Joshua Liner Gallery. Kurata, who was born in Osaka, Japan, and raised in Tokyo and Chicago, has been based in NYC since studying illustration at Parsons in the mid-00s. Since then, he has shown steadily in Japan and the United States, most recently in […]
