Preview: KAWS – “Down Time” @ High Museum of Art

Continuing to raise his profile with each successive museum show (see The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum and Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth), Brian Donnelly, a.k.a. KAWS, moves on to his next stop – The High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Down Time will feature a 22-foot-high, site-specific mural where visitors are invited to watch the street-turned contemporary-artist paint live over the course of a week in early February. KAWS fans out there will be pleased to know that the next figure from the street turned contemporary artist has dropped. Partners features a sculpt of the artist standing next to his companion figure. If this looks familiar, it’s because you probably have seen the statue at Disneyland featuring Walt Disney standing next to Mickey Mouse although not cringing like in this version. On Friday night, AM attended Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth where KAWS unveiled his latest show in the Lone Star state. The exhibition entitled Focus:KAWS is a mix of color and monotone works from the Brooklyn based artist including a previous series of tondos which made its way from this year’s Armory. In addition, the monocolor counterpart of the neon Dissected Companion from his showing with Honor Fraser also made an appearance. For fans of KAWS that have collected the first two colors of his elusive SpongeBob print, the good news is he’s going to be releasing the anticipated third color to round out the trifecta on December 13th. There was no sign of KAWS this year in person at Art Basel Week Miami. Perhaps it’s because he is preparing for his upcoming show, FOCUS:KAWS (teased), at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Judging from this photo, the catalog is ready to go as well as some installed 20″ tondos in the background that look familiar. The first art fair AM hit up when we got to Miami was the main Art Basel event. Because it was the special buyer’s preview, we saw many collectors (including us) rushing to their favorite galleries for a chance to buy works from their favorite artists. So this was not only the perfect time to beat the crowds see the standout works like the Giacometti sculpture seen above, but also celebrity watch as they made their rounds looking for their blue chip artwork. Publications: KAWS for Whitewall’s Winter Luxury Issue

For this year’s winter luxury issue, Whitewall invited KAWS to design the cover (in two versions). In addition to this collaboration on the front of the glossy, the magazine will publish a 12-page studio visit feature including an in-depth interview, portraits of the artist, images of his new work, and KAWS’ own sketches and blueprints of his sculptures and paintings. We recently broke news of a special benefit auction, New Day, created by Takashi Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki Co. & Christie’s to help the victims of the tragic Tohoku-Pacific Earthquake. Last week, AM stopped by to catch the special viewing of the fresh works from many stars of the contemporary art scene. On Friday, November 9th, Christie’s will partner with Takashi Murakami and Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd. to provide support for the victims of the March 11, 2011 Tohoku-Pacific earthquake in Japan by dedicating a special section of a forthcoming New York auction to the continuing relief effort. Proceeds from the sale – expected to reach $5 million – will be contributed to The Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Global Giving, and International Medical Corps, providing relief to the survivors of the catastrophe. Since the Dissected Milo set was released back in February, KAWS hasn’t released anything on the vinyl toy front, undoubtedly due to focusing on his fine art and recent solo Hold the Line.
