Basel Week Miami ’10 – Rhona Hoffman Gallery

As we strolled down the aisle’s of Art Basel Miami Beach, our eyes wandered towards paintings that were undeniably and unmistakeably by a certain artist.  That artist is Kehinde Wiley and they were hung on the walls of  Chicago’s Rhona Hoffman Gallery’s booth.  The pieces are from The World Stage: India-Sri Lanka series and feature – what else – portraits of various men.  Meet the rest of them after the jump…

Before the big Rosson Crow show opening (covered), Deitch Projects hosted Kehinde Wiley’s project with PUMA for several days on it’s tour stop before heading to China and Italy. If you remember, his paintings of World Cup players from Africa and related products celebrating the unity of the continent had made previous stops in Berlin and Paris. Shaquille O’Neal’s curatorial debut opened at Flag Art Foundation this past Friday to a mass of curious art fans. NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal is known by many nicknames: “the Big Aristotle”, “the MDE”, “the Big Shaqtus”, “The Big Baryshnikov” and we can now dub him “the Big Curator”? Kehinde Wiley x PUMA (Paris Opening)

You may recall a project we told you about recently between Kehinde Wiley and PUMA for the World Cup this year. If you remember, the exhibition of paintings Kehinde created of three African soccer stars as well as a portrait with all three together representing the unity of Africa traveled to Berlin for an official unveiling. It has now moved on to Paris and Guillotine has all the pics including the individual portraits. More pics after the jump.

While his former assistants Kevin Cyr and Jason Bryant opened their own show in NY, Kehinde Wiley was busy working with on a new World Cup project with PUMA in Africa. Samuel Eto’o of Cameroon, John Mensah of Ghana, and Emmanuel Eboué of Ivory Coast, three of Africa’s brightest soccer stars, sat down with Kehinde and posed for individual portraits as well as one all together symbolizing the unity of their continent. Releases: Kehinde Wiley – “The World Stage: Brazil” Hardcover

You may remember when we covered Kehinde Wiley’s show at Roberts & Tilton back in April.  Well, the gallery has now released “The World Stage: Brazil” book, a 22 paintings from when Wiley was in the South American country looking for subjects for his signature portraiture.  Also, be on the lookout for the January issue of Juxtapoz where Wiley scored the cover.
