“WALLWORKS” @ The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas

In a project reminiscent of the old parking structure at the LACMA (now demolished), the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas has commissioned several artists to christen each level of their parking garage with their signature imagery. Openings: Art Shack @ Laguna Art Museum

Last weekend, the Laguna Art Museum opened their doors to crowds of art fans anxious to check out the newest exhibition – Art Shack. The group show included installations by artists like Mike Shine (featured), Martin Wittfooth, Kenny Scharf, Clayton Brothers (featured), and Jeff Gillette (who showed recently in LA) with a fantastic three-dimensional representation of his signature “slum” imagery. Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Wynwood Walls

AM swung by Deitch Project’s Wynwood Walls early yesterday to check out the massive mural installation, still in progress. Upon arriving at the complex, we were greeted by Martha Cooper (interviewed) who was busy taking shots of Futura, Shepard Fairey (featured), Os Gemeos and Kenny Scharf as they were busy installing their massive murals. With additional pieces by Aiko, Barry McGee and Swoon (interviewed), expect Wynwood Walls to present an impressive showing later this evening. More pictures after the jump.

Openings: LIVESTRONG x Nike Stages Exhibition (NYC) @ Deitch Projects

As anticipated, the highly praised “Stages” exhibition made it’s US debut yesterday in a beautiful pop-up space hosted by Deitch Projects in New York’s Soho district. As we mentioned when the show debuted in Paris (covered), “Stages” is a traveling exhibition curated by Nike and Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong Foundation to elevate awareness of the fight against cancer with some of the art world’s most influential artists. In this short from 2007, Dennis Hopper shares his passion for art collecting and gives a guided tour of his personal collection.   Hopper, who befriended many of contemporary art’s greats starting in the 1950’s, has an impressive collection of both paintings and anecdotes featuring such luminaries as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Basquiat, and Kenny Scharf.  Enjoy!

Newjungle (left), Madgladtree (center),  Wildjungle (right) AM was on hand as Kenny Scharf opened his first solo exhibition in Los Angeles since 2005.  Honor Fraser Gallery was filled with groovy, brightly colored florescent paintings and sculptures from the legendary Pop artist.  Continuing with his mission of penetrating the boundaries of fine art through the use and reference of popular culture, Scharf’s paintings features characters from the Hanna-Barbera universe, mainly The Flinstones and The Jetsons.
