Showing: Jonathan Yeo – “You’re Only Young Twice” @ Lazarides

Earlier this month, Lazarides hosted the opening of Jonathan Yeo’s solo exhibition You’re Only Young Twice. The new paintings focused on the phenomena of plastic surgery with imagery of patients being marked preoperatively, scenes from the operation, as well as before and after comparison shots. Rendered beautifully in photorealistic and abstract techniques, the new body of work once again shows off the technical skills as well as wit of the British artist. Showing: Swoon – “Murmuration” @ Black Rat Projects

Earlier this month, Swoon’s (interviewed) first London solo exhibition opened up at the Black Rat Projects. She has spent three long weeks transforming the gallery space with sculptural paper installations that she collectively entitled Mumuration. The project utilized imagery from much of her previous work including her Art in the Streets install at the MOCA, Thalassa at the NOMA, Anthropocene Extinction at the Boston (ICA). Openings: “Attack of the Space Waffles” @ Outsiders

Space Invader is back to London for a solo show at the Outsiders and what a better way to celebrate December with an Attack of Space Waffles? Showcasing a series of brand new mosaic alias’ and some other goodies like stickers and limited editions. The basement features an ‘Invaded Disco Ball’, and a 20 minute documentary following Invader throughout his street missions, and also a ‘Space Waffle Machine‘ dispensing hot waffles throughout the exhibition to the delight of the gallery’s Christmas visitors. ‘Tis the season to be invaded… More pics after the jump…

Streets: Banksy (London)

Over the weekend, several new pieces from Banksy popped up in London including this plane with the heart trail seen above. Fans of Mr. B had already been on high alert as word came of a new print to be released soon from POW. Other stencils that showed up include a red version of the plane as well as a sign that states “Sorry! The lifestyle you ordered is currently out of stock.” Photos after the jump…

Releases / Teaser: “Walls and Frames” Book Launch

The latest book by Gestalten, Walls & Frames, edited by Maximiliano Ruiz focuses on emerging international street artists and documents how they are transitioning from street to galleries, using innovative tools and techniques that are shaping a new direction of contemporary art. To celebrate the international release, all 101 participating artists have created handmade cover sleeves that will be available for sale during the launch parties in London at POW on the 8th of December and Gestalten Space in Berlin on 15th of December. Openings: Evol & Friends @ Pictures On Walls

Following his recent installation in London Smithfield market (covered here), German artist EVOL and a full supporting cast of artists took over Pictures on Walls for the Christmas show with installations, sculptures, books and limited edition prints. Other featured artists include Banksy, Barminski, Dran, Tilt, James Cauty, Paul Insect, Wayne White, Might Mo, Todd James, Invader, Cept, Jerome Miller, Pacolli, Victor Van Gaasbeek, Zach Schrey and more. Video / Preview: Swoon – “Murmuration” @ Black Rat Projects

We mentioned this a couple weeks ago, but now is a good time for a reminder to make your way down to Black Rat Projects on December 1st for the unveiling of Swoon’s (interviewed) newest showing. Entitled Mumuration, the project has taken the Brooklyn-based artist three long weeks to create, transforming the gallery into an immersive installation featuring her signature intricate and elaborate paper cuts and sculptural shapings. Showing: Ryan McGinley – “Wandering Comma” @ Alison Jacques Gallery

For his first London exhibition at Alison Jacques Gallery since the celebrated Moonmilk series over two years ago, Ryan McGinley has assembled seven new photographs, all in the largest format the American artist has yet worked in. Wandering Comma features photographs harmoniously balancing the orchestrated and the unpredictable, the staged and the spontaneous. Although the images begin with choreographed scenarios, the images that result are never wholly pre-meditated leaving their own freedom and initiative to the models or situation. Running through Thursday, December 22nd, Wandering Comma is a must-see show for anyone in and around the London area.
