[…]

Previews: Jose Parla – “Echo Of Impressions” @ Ben Brown Fine Art (London)

Echo Of Impressions is set to open on October 3rd at the London branch of Ben Brown Fine Arts, a new solo show from Jose Parla. The new large-scale abstract paintings and sculptural pieces from the New York-based artist continue his practice of documenting his observations of the urban space, referencing these memories to create works that mimic the textures and colors of the cityscape. Parla’s work goes deeper than just exploring the “physical impressions left around the city by time and passers-by” as he also taps into […]

Interviews: Carl Cashman

Art historian Hector Campbell recently sat down with British artist and gallerist Carl Cashman to discuss the creation of his distinctive artistic style, his early artistic influences, love of collecting, and the frustrations he felt as an artist which led to the founding of Semi Skimmed Gallery, whose second group exhibition opens at BSMT Space in Dalston, London on September 6th, and runs until Sept 12th. Hector Campbell (HC): You’ve become renowned for your geometric optical art, particularly since you coined the word ‘Neometry’ in […]

Recap: Sandra Chevrier – “Les Cages; We Can’t Be Tamed” @ Stolenspace

Through the beginning of this month, Stolenspace in Londonhosted a new body of work from Sandra Chevrier (interviewed) entitled Les Cages; We Can’t Be Tamed. Continuing her series of paintings that examine the masks we wear because of social expectations, the Canadian-born artist once again applies her signature aesthetic of wrapping faces with comic book imagery to her latest pieces. Rounding out the show was a striking installation that crept from top of the wall to floor on the far end of the gallery. Chevrier further explains – […]

Recap: Mark Jenkins – “BRD SHT” @ Lazinc

Just closing over the weekend in London, BRD SHT from Mark Jenkins (interviewed) filled Lazinc with clever sculptural works that mirror his public interventions. At times disconcerting because of the American artist’s use of the human form, the nine sculptural pieces were joined by three canvases and works on paper that also were a testament to his dark humor. Jenkins further explains – “BRD SHT, the show’s title, nods to a license plate in the film Brewster McCloud. In the film, it was a murderous substance and while I understand here […]

Showing: Dran – “Dessin du Jour/Londres”

Dran opened a new pop-up exhibition in London over the weekend entitled Dessin du Jour. As the title suggests, the body of work is dominated by approximately 120 drawings which the artist has been executing on a daily basis in preparation for the show. The pieces individually distill down the small victories and defeats, dreams and doubts and joys and sorrows of everyday life. We see a man marooned on an island encircled and cut-off by gridlocked traffic which speaks to the isolation of modern urban life, […]

Upcoming: Mark Jenkins – “BRD SHT” @ Lazinc

After a provocative installation on the rooftops of London back in March bringing attention to mental health issues and suicide, Mark Jenkins (interviewed) will be returning for an encore at Lazinc. From the looks of things, the American artist has been preparing inside as well as outside for his solo on May 25th (public opening), including placing one of this signature hooded figures fishing for art collectors with a framed picture of a worm in front of the Mayfair gallery. Entitled BRD SHT, the exhibition will include nine sculptural pieces, […]

Streets: Mark Jenkins x CALM – “Project 84” (London)

Starting a few days ago, passerbys of some of London’s ITV buildings were treated to an unsettling sight if their eyes lifted to the sky. What appeared to be 84 men, standing on the edge the rooftops as if about to jump, were installed by Mark Jenkins (interviewed) and collaborator Sandra Fernandez as part of a campaign being run by the Campaign against Living Miserably, or CALM. Dovetailing nicely with the  American street artist’s habit of leaving his signature packing tape works in the public arena for people […]

Following up on their show in 2014 (covered), the Miaz Brothers recently opened up their solo with Lazarides at their new Mayfair home, Lazinc Sackville. Entitled Anonymous, the 16 paintings on display are a continuation of the Italian duo’s Antimatter series, comprised of the out of focus portraits (and one sculpture) that they have become famous for. The haunting large-format canvases are created using a meticulous layering of spray paint and feature more experimental and bolder brush strokes this go around. Check out more photos of the exhibition below… Photos […]
