After a first look at the inaugural ComplexCon, held at the Long Beach Convention Center, we now will focus in on a few things that caught our eye. Like their recent high profile projects at Times Square in New York, with Modernica in Los Angeles, and for the MTV Movie Awards, the Dabs Myla created an immersive installation for the attendees to enjoy. Featuring sculptural as well as painted elements featuring their signature retro cartoonish characters, the area from the two featured a steady stream of people wandering […]
This past weekend, our friends at Complex held their first ever “pop culture world fair” in Los Angeles and it was pretty spectacular. Entitled ComplexCon, the inaugural convention gathered some of the top creative minds in the respective fields of fashion, music, culinary fare and of course art to create a unique two day event to satisfy even the most adventurous individual. The staff at AM had the run of the Long Beach Convention Center and there were more events & exhibits than we could […]
With the inaugural ComplexCon fast approaching this weekend, the people behind POW! WOW! are prepping their contribution – a living area with artist driven furniture from the likes of Risk, Sharktoof, Persue and others, as well as a gallery with original art from Yoskay Yamamoto, Aaron De La Cruz, Tristan Eaton and more. Created in partnership with Big Bad Wolf, Thinkspace, Cool Sofa, and Imprint, the area’s largest attraction though is probably a large scale installation from James Jean (interviewed) that visitors will be able to take a […]

Not only did fans in the beach city get to see murals from some of their favorite artists (covered), but also a high quality selection of work in a museum […]

With this year’s POW! WOW! Long Beach fast approaching, the installation of the associated group show is already underway at the Long Beach Museum of Art with murals being prepped by a large roster of artists. Vitality & Verve: In the Third Dimension is presented by the museum in collaboration with Thinkspace & POW! WOW! LB and will feature originals, installations, and murals (just like last year). Over the course of last week, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) set up an installation at ad agency and supporter of the arts interTrend in Long Beach. The piece entitled wish you were here… was originally part of a show at the Japanese American National Museum in Little Tokyo that has now been reconfigured in two parts for the new space. Take a look at more photos below… Photo credit: Brandon Shigeta. Discuss Yoskay Yamamoto here.
With Chinese New Year coming up on Monday, interTrend in Long Beach has teamed up with James Jean (interviewed) for an interactive installation to celebrate the occasion. The project centers around the red envelopes given out around the holidays by families for good luck. In this case, they have been secured to the front of the company’s building (228 E. Broadway), set to be revealed tomorrow morning to be gifted to the public. As the red packets are removed, the imagery of Jean will be slowly revealed in […]
