Upcoming: BEYOND THE STREETS (Los Angeles) – Curated by Roger Gastman

In 2011, Roger Gastman was an associate curator of Art in the Streets, the first major US museum (at MOCA) survey of graffiti and street art. As one of the world’s foremost authorities on these art forms and movements, he returns to curate a groundbreaking follow-up to the show, called BEYOND THE STREETS. The spectacular exhibition will include over 100 artists (including perhaps one very big surprise one?) showcasing paintings, sculpture, photography, and installations (including a re-creation, in partnership with adidas Skateboarding, of the famous Venice Pavilion), on more […]

Previews: Camille Rose Garcia – “The Wonderful World of Dr. Deekay” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Following up on her show in 2016 (covered here & here), Camille Rose Garcia will be opening her solo soon in downtown Los Angeles at Corey Helford Gallery on May 12th entitled The Wonderful World of Dr. Deekay. As referenced by the title of the exhibition, the work centers around imagery from her new illustrated dystopian novel and stop motion animation documenting the horror of her real life dental experience of enduring “11 root canals, a full mouth reconstruction, gum surgery, and finally a bad reaction to an anti-anxiety pill […]

Upcoming: Daniel Arsham – “Character Study” @ Morán Morán Gallery

Tonight in Los Angeles, Morán Morán Gallery will be opening a solo show from Daniel Arsham entitled Character Study. The title likely references the first part of the New York-based artist’s new body of work, the large scale recreations of his childhood collection of cartoon character patches that adorned his backpack. Created with plaster and in white, as is the formerly color-blind artist’s practice, the pieces which amazingly look to have the texture of cloth, are dusted with pigment chiaroscuro style. Arsham explains – “When I began delving into […]

Upcoming: Brendan Monroe – “Formations” @ Heath Ceramics (Los Angeles)

After shows with Heath Ceramics in 2014 (in LA) and 2015 (in SF), Brendan Monroe (interviewed) will be returning for another exhibition at the Los Angeles location starting Saturday night (April 7th). Entitled Formations, some of the new body of work will be a little different than his sculptural pieces in the past as he has decided to explore Heath tile’s flat clay surface as a new medium. Molding the surface, making it more dimensional, Monroe has created a series of pieces that feature his organic patterns and […]

Streets: KAWS – “BFF” Statue (Los Angeles)

While in Asia for back to back openings in Japan (covered) and Hong Kong (covered), KAWS also had a project he was working on in Los Angeles. Rising up high in its new home in Silicone Beach, the Brooklyn-based artist’s newest sculptural BFF statue now stands tall in front of a parking structure in Playa Vista. With this piece joining a recent one at the Hamad International Airport in Qatar and a permanent sculpture in Texas, we suspect his fans around the world will begin seeing more and more […]

Previews: “Immersion” @ Richard Heller Gallery

This Saturday night, March 24th, Richard Heller Gallery in Los Angeles will be opening a group show entitled Immersion. Participating artists include Dan Attoe (seen above), Amy Bennett, Morgan Blair, Ryan Travis Christian, Hanna Hansdotter, Kajahl, Matthew Palladino, Super Future Kid, Christian Rex van Minnen, Mark […]

The latest piece (with support from Branded Arts) features one of the Portuguese artist’s signature chiseled portraits surrounded by RETNA’s (featured) instantly recognizable urban script. If you are around Echo Park (Alvarado & Sunset), stop by for a look yourself. Check out more photos and a video below… Photo credit: @metalzombieman (top image), @streetartfocus, @streetartdistortion, and the artist. Discuss Vhils here. […]

Recap: Matsukatsu Sashie – “Kaleidoscope” @ KP Projects

Today was the last day to see Masakatsu Sashie’s excellent Kaleidoscope at KP Projects in Los Angeles, an exhibition that sees him continue exploring works that have a distinctive surreal yet post-apocalyptic feel. The solo show from the Japanese artist allowed him present a series of paintings of his signature amalgamations of urban structures, the most recognizable being his suspended globes. On display also was a sweet sculptural work, a three dimensional representation of his orbs. Take a look at more photos below… Photo credit: @bshigeta, @bunnie_gram, […]
