Videos / Set Up: Mark Whalen – “Portals” @ Merry Karnowsky

Tomorrow night, Mark Whalen (featured) will be unveiling all new works at the Merry Karnowksy Gallery. Entitled Portals, the name certainly can be descriptive of the imagery seen in his paintings – strange beings that look like they might have appeared through doorways into another dimension or world. Whalen has come a long way since his days as a Sydney based street artist known as Kill Pixie, and this return to the Los Angeles showspace sees him further explore what we saw from him at last year’s exhibition there […]

Set Up: Mal Kadel – “Stuck On A Wave” @ Merry Karnowsky

After a showing there in 2011, Mel Kadel returns to the Merry Karnowsky Gallery for another exhibition this weekend. Entitled Stuck On A Wave, the new work features her delicate pen strokes and renderings of her characters frolicking in vibrant patterns and interlocking shapes. The opening is on Saturday, October 13th, but for now, check out some photos of the setup. Photo credit: theonepointeight. Discuss Mel Kadel here.

Upcoming: Clare Rojas – “Pith” @ PRISM

On October 19th, Clare Rojas will be opening her second solo showing (see 2011) at the PRISM Gallery in Los Angeles. Entitled Pith, the new body of work continues the Bay Area-based artist’s recent exploration of abstraction with the removal of her classic figures from her work. The new paintings, done in oil instead of her typical acrylic, appear to still use the palette familiar to most of her fans but is focused on “abstract space and the blurring between architectural dimensionality and geometric flatness.” […]

Preview: Seonna Hong – “Persistence of Vision” @ LeBasse Projects

Next Saturday, October 13th, at the Culver City LeBasse Projects, new works from Seonna Hong (interviewed) will be unveiled in an exhibition entitled Persistence of Vision. This is her first solo with the gallery and her first in Los Angeles in seven years, so fans of her work don’t want to miss this show. The new paintings delve into the ideas of perception and visual memory with her familiar girls and bears placed in abstract environments. Also present will be her recent exploration of the use of […]

Openings: “Nailed” @ Subliminal Projects

Nailed is a counter-culture / couture show in some respects, give or take a small stretch of the imagination. Put on by Subliminal Projects and based on a book of the same name, photographers from around the globe and all walks of life were commissioned to document nail artists, and their clientele. It is certainly an art form that has been overlooked, for better or for worst. During tonight’s closing reception, the exhibiton will turn the gallery into a make-shift (Imperial) nail salon with music, drinks […]

Openings: Tran Nguyen & Stella Im Hultberg – “Borrowed Memories” @ Thinkspace Gallery

We last saw a solo by Tran back in July last year and a Hultberg solo hasn’t been any easier to come by (March 2010 – London). Fans will want to make use of this opportunity and visit before the close of the exhibition on October 20th. Discuss this show here. Discuss […]
