Openings: Colin Christian – “Hello, Pretty Pretty” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Over the weekend, alongside new work from RISK, the talented Colin Christian (interviewed) put a selection of his sculptural creations on display at the Corey Helford Gallery. Much like his showing in Texas earlier in the year (covered), the new body of work collectively entitled Hello, Pretty Pretty featured a mix of free standing figures and wall mounted faces, all produced in Christian’s signature cyber-erotic aesthetic. The showing runs through August 4th for those interested in seeing them in-person. Photo credit: Carlos Gonzalez for Arrested Motion. Discuss this show here. Discuss Colin Christian here.

Openings: RISK – “Old Habits Die Hard” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Over the weekend, the Corey Helford Gallery unveiled a new body of work from the LA-based graffiti artist RISK. The Culver City showspace had only recently curated a group exhibition including RISK that is currently showing in the UK (covered) and Old Habits Die Hard builds on the work from that show with further explorations into neon creations and sculptural pieces. Also present were some paintings produced over a backdrop of license plates as seen behind the artist above. Photo credit: Carlos Gonzalez for Arrested Motion. Preview: Andy Kehoe – “Into The Depths” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Tomorrow night (July 7th) sees Andy Kehoe returning to Thinkspace Gallery for another solo show, but he has brought a new body of work that explores a new medium and technique with him this time. Utilizing resin to create a more layered and three-dimensional look, the early images look amazing and AM can’t wait to see these in person. The same whimsical characters, autumnal imagery, imaginative backgrounds, and palette are still present but they now seem to have more depth and come alive with the new look. Stop by […]

Preview: Dan McCarthy – “Dear Science” @ Gallery 1988 (Venice)

Returning to the gallery that previously hosted two of his solos (see 2010 and 2011), Dan McCarthy (interviewed) will be filling the walls of Gallery 1988 with a new body of work, this time at their Venice location. Entitled Dear Science and opening on July 7th, the showing will include both originals and the limited editions he is known for. As usual, the New England-based artist will be referencing the natural world surrounding the region with beautiful plays on differing lighting (and it also looks like he has added some graphical […]

Streets: Eduardo Kobra (Los Angeles)

After recently gifting New York with a mural that remixes a famous Alfred Eisenstaedt photograph (which is also is visible from the High Line), Sao Paulo-based street muralist Eduardo Kobra has travelled to Los Angeles to work on another piece. The commissioned wall is set to be revealed to the public today, Independence Day, at 1255 La Brea Ave. In honor of the holiday, the artist has painted his own version of the iconic Mount Rushmore in Keystone, South Dakota. Stop by to check it out for yourself if you […]

Openings: Arrested Motion – “City of Fire” @ Stephen Webster (Part II)

It’s been a few weeks since we unveiled our City of Fire show and we still have more images from the reception to share.  These are images of the people that came out to support and view the exhibition, as well as some of the artists that were able to make it out. As a international online entity, it is sometimes rare that we are able to have physical interaction with our readers, the artists whose work we love and promote, and our peers, so […]

Openings: Kid Acne – “Stand & Deliver” @ C.A.V.E Gallery

Over the weekend, the C.A.V.E. Gallery hosted the opening reception for Kid Acne’s (interviewed) newest solo entitled Stand & Deliver. The UK-based artist brought a selection of work to the Venice showspace featuring his “stabby women,” some of which was set against a backdrop of a patterned motif seen frequently in his street work. Rounding out the show was a series of customized spray cans as well as a outdoor mural. He’ll be working on some other walls around the LA area so keep your eyes peeled. Photo credit: Richard […]

Openings: David Cooley – “Dashing In Headlong” @ Thinkspace

A couple weeks ago, the Thinkspace Gallery introduced work from new artist David Cooley collectively entitled Dashing In Headlong. The Santa Barbara-based painter’s fresh patterns and imagery caught our eyes, but his unusual technique had us scratching our heads. A little research showed that he starts by sourcing print materials / fabric and then mounting them to wood panel. Then, after a layer of resin he creates the base pattern & lays multiple layers down and folows this by using a dental type instrument to create […]

Upcoming: Eric Fortune – “A Life to Leave” @ Lebasse Projects (Culver City)

Coming up next month on the 14th, the Culver City location of the Lebasse Projects will be hosting a solo show from Eric Fortune (interviewed). Last we saw of the Ohio-based painter, it was the end of 2010 and he was showing at the same space alongside Nate Frizzell. The new body of work deals with characters in transition between the known and the unknown, all rendered with his time-consuming “glazing” technique infusing each piece with subtle details and luminous lighting. Discuss this show here. […]
