Teaser: Laurie Lipton – “L.A. Sous-Real” @ Ace Gallery (Los Angeles)

Coming up next month, Laurie Lipton (interviewed) will be opening her latest solo L.A. Sous-Real at the Ace Gallery in Los Angeles. Featuring her amazing skills with graphite and charcoal, the gifted artist will be putting on display a series of work featuring her signature surreal and hyper-detailed imagery, often executed with witty and biting commentary (LA is ripe for the taking don’t you think?). Recently, the Merry Karnowsky gallery presented new artwork by Edward Walton Wilcox. Titled Though You Slay Me, the show featured a number of oil paintings which focused on Wilcox’s use of the chiaroscuro effect to create a series of gloomy portraits and environments. Also on display were a collection of sketches which incorporate his style and technique but in a different size and format. A couple Saturdays ago, the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City hosted the opening for Wild at Heart, a benefit show where some of the proceeds went towards Born Free USA. The group exhibition featured artists and their choice of endangered species to paint or work with leading to some great pieces being created. On Tuesday night, Los Angeles showgoers got their midweek art fix at Stephen Webster when the City of Fire exhibition was unveiled. Coming up in a couple weeks, the Thinkspace Gallery will be hosting Between Wind and Water, a joint show between Sarah Joncas (interviewed) & Caia Coopman. The Toronto-based painter will be presenting 18 new pieces, including the one seen above featuring her female portraiture. A couple weeks ago, Japanese artist Naoto Hattori opened a show at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica alongside Matt Dangler’s solo (covered). Not only did Mind Project bring a selection of the psychedelic and surreal paintings that fans have come to expect from Hattori, it also marked a rare appearance from him at the opening reception.
