Openings: Amy Sol – “Numina” @ Corey Helford

On Saturday night, painter Amy Sol (interviewed) unveiled works she created for Numina, her newest solo at the Corey Helford Gallery. Featuring 10 acrylic on wood panel pieces, the show was inspired by the world “numinous,” chosen not necessarily for it’s meaning but also for the shape and sound of the word itself. The title seemed to be a worthy starting point as her new paintings are steeped in mystery, magic, and narrative wonder while showing a progression of the Las Vegas-based artist’s signature soft palette, delicate washes, […]

Preview: Todd Schorr – “Neverlasting Miracles” @ Merry Karnowsky

This Saturday night, March 17th, Todd Schorr (featured) makes a return to Merry Karnowsky with a new selection of paintings collectively entitled Neverlasting Miracles. As with his showing in 2009 (covered) at the same gallery, the masterful Los Angeles-based painter will be exploring themes of our evolution (or de-volution), the human condition, sardonic views of modern society and pop culture, all rendered beautifully with an obvious gift for composition. ©Carlos Gonzalez stopped by to snap some teaser photos for your enjoyment.  See them all after […]

Teaser: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Jokes On Me…” @ LeBasse Projects – Chinatown

Over the past couple years, every time we have stopped by Yoskay Yamamoto’s (interviewed) studio for a visit (here, here and here), we saw evidence of some pretty sweet customs he had been working on when he had extra time. Taking classic toys and figures and remixing them with wood, clay, and paint, the new pieces were changed to have classic Yamamoto features. It now looks like these will all be revealed to the public at the LeBasse Projects in Chinatown in a showing entitled […]

A couple weeks ago, the Richard Heller Gallery in Santa Monica hosted the opening for Corey Arnold’s Wolf Tide. His travels have taken him to the Bering Sea, Europe, South Africa, the Atlantic, and the Arctic. and his subjects include humans, eagles, gulls, deer, vast seascapes and surreal landscapes. More photos from the opening and images after the jump…

Streets: El Mac – “Verse” Memorial

As a way to pay tribute to those who have passed, artist often paint murals in remembrance of their friends who have fallen along the way. After a recent fitting piece in collaboration with Augustine Kofie (featured) to remember DASH 2000, a former member of the UTI (Under The Influence) graffiti crew, El Mac has now painted one for Marcos “Verse” Vasquez in Mid-City, Los Angeles. If you remember, Mac also collaborated with RETNA (featured) a couple years ago on another memorial mural at Mid City Arts. More photos after the […]

Teaser: Jim Houser – “As Quiet As Itʼs Kept” @ LeBasse Projects (Culver City)

We last had the pleasure of seeing one of Jim Houser’s installations about a year back at last year’s Armory Week in New York. Now, as it was back then, we are still intrigued by the Philadelphia-based artist’s use of his own brand of symbology and visual language. Fans in Los Angeles will get the opportunity to witness for themselves on Saturday night, March 10th, as Houser (you can see a glimpse of him setting up above) will be opening his As Quiet As Itʼs Kept exhibition […]

Previews: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Sky Ladder” @ MOCA (Los Angeles) – Part II

A couple days ago, we brought you images of some of the amazing gunpowder drawings being created by Cai Guo-Qiang, his assistants, and a group of volunteers at the Los Angeles MOCA. We now have for you process photos of the second commissioned piece from the renowned Chinese artist entitled Zero Gravity (approx. 11 x 39 feet), which portrays “mankind’s undying fantasy to defy gravity and its unsuccessful challenges by naive measures since antiquity.” For those interested (and if you are MOCA members), you will […]

Michael Heizer – “Levitated Mass” for LACMA (In Transit)

Levitated Mass is a project conceived by artist Michael Heizer in 1968, that has waited until now after he has spent decades looking for an appropriate sized boulder. The installation on the LACMA campus will consist of a 456-foot-long slot, over which is placed said granite megalith, all of which conceptually speaks to “the expanse of art history, from ancient traditions of creating artworks from megalithic stone, to modern forms of abstract geometries and cutting-edge feats of engineering.” This newest construct is one in a […]

Book Signing: Mark Ryden @ Taschen Books

Last week in Los Angeles at Taschen Books,  Mark Ryden held a signing for his comprehensive publication – Pinxit. As we witnessed during the Art Basel Miami release party (here), this is the “bible” for collectors of the renowned low brow artist’s work as its 366 pages Ryden’s 20 year career and art like no other book can. While the current Collector’s Edition was too pricey for the casual fan (a regular edition will be released later), Ryden could be seen autographing other items (like […]
