After a successful showing at Joshua Liner Gallery (covered), Yumiko Kayukawa hops over to the west coast to hit up Shooting Gallery for her next conquest – “Wild Wild East.” The November 14th show is a whiles away, but we thought you’d drool over this bad-ass little teaser. Openings: Shawn Barber & Turf One – “Life Size” @ Yves Laroche Gallery

Shawn Barber’s joint show (previewed) with Turf One entitled “Life-Size” opened last night at the Yves Laroche Gallery.  A good size crowd showed up to take in the raw and honest portraits of tattoo culture that Barber is known for as well as street artist Turf One (aka Jean Labourdette) and his unique sculptural and caricature-like approach to painting.  Take a look at all the pics after the jump…

Preview/Setup: Neighborhood SF @ 111 Minna

111 Minna will be presenting their latest show, “Neighborhood SF,” with the opening scheduled for tonight.  Curated by Martin Olive and Ryan Malley, “Neighborhoods” is easily looking like one of the better group shows this year.  Having SF artists interpret their respective neighborhoods is a great concept, and when you’ve got the likes of Jeremy Fish, Sylvia Ji, N8 Van Dyke, Mike Giant and David Choong Lee involved, well, let’s just say it takes the boring out of neighboring artists…. Installation shots after the jump.

Highlights: Recommended Openings For September 3-9

September is here and with it comes the kickoff of the new art season. Expect a TON of amazing shows throughout the month as everyone gears back up for the fall season and the fairs coming up this December in Miami. Leading the charge is the return to San Francisco for The Date Farmers with their show “Strange Fruit” (teased). Carlos Ramirez and Armando Lerma attribute their paintings, collages and three-dimensional pieces to inspiration gained from their Mexican-American traditional values and contemporary West-coast culture and look to […]

Preview: Matt Dangler – “Gifts of the Magi” @ Copro Gallery

The last time time AM saw Matt Dangler, he was preparing for his “Searching for Satori” show at Gallery 1988 (interviewed).  With his latest show “Gifts of the Magi” opening this Saturday at Copro Gallery, Matt has sent us a couple preview images and sketches.  Here’s what he has to say about his upcoming show: “I have a good feeling about my September 5th show. At the forefront… and probably to most people’s surprise, I finally feel like I’m being myself. Perhaps I got caught […]

The show opens tomorrow night, September 2nd, at Yves Laroche Gallery. More preview images from both artists after the jump.

Preview: Sylvia Ji – “Nectar” @ StolenSpace

Recently we teased you with a shot from Sylvia Ji’s (interviewed) studio for her upcoming show “Nectar” at StolenSpace. Now, we bring you a closer look as her UK debut on September 3rd draws near. As the title of the show implies, “Nectar” focuses more on the sublime expressions of lust and love. The color palette seems lighter and will use more gold leaf detailing much like the Baroque-style artwork that we observed from her last show – Haute Epoch. If you’re in London, be sure to stop […]

Teaser: Amy Sol @ Copro Gallery

Amy Sol (interviewed) sent us a first look at her upcoming show at Copro Gallery in November.  It’s been a while since we have seen a solo from Amy (last December at Mondo Bizzarro Gallery), and even that one was a break from her usual wood pieces.  That’s why we are especially looking forward to this new body of work.  The Las Vegas-based artist tells us that she will have be focusing on her love for the desert and will explore this particular theme in […]

Preview: Dan May – “The Nature of Things to Come” @ Copro Gallery

After his last successful solo show at Copro Gallery in February, Dan May (interviewed) is back again with a mini show entitled “The Nature of Things to Come.” Opening on September 5th, Dan will be exhibiting along with Matt Dangler (interviewed) and Noferin. May is someone that we have been following for a very long time, and it’s always nice to see artists mature and come into their own. As seen in our favorite piece from the show “The Persuasion of Penelope” (above), his narrative […]
