Looks like Sylvia Ji (interviewed) is in the midst of preparing for her first solo show in the UK entitled “Nectar” set to open on September 3rd at StolenSpace.Â She posted up a shot of her studio with some in progress works recently on her blog, where she also revealed a print set project she’s been working on. Looks like these mouseketeer buddies of Bob Dob were on the wrong side of a beat down.Â He did ten variants on this theme for his show “Black Eyed Mouseketeers” opening at Perihelion Arts in Phoenix tomorrow night.Â Of course, he had to include the little devil “Luey” in the mix as well.Â See him and some more of the images after the jump…

The annual BLAB! Show returns to Copro Gallery and brings with it the usual lineup of heavy hitters. Big news is that Mark Ryden will be exhibiting an older 10×11″ illustration-based work in the show, which can be yours for $33k. Openings: Kokeshi Show @ Japanese American National Museum

The Japanese American National Museum is holding an exhibition (previewed) until October 4th about all things “Kokeshi.”Â However, the highlight of the show were the custom kokeshi’s created by many of the artists that we at AM enjoy.Â It’s not often we see such an extensive list of quality artists in a group show, let alone a customs show. One of the shows we are looking forward to this month is Shawn Barber’s solo at the Shooting Gallery in SF. His show, entitled “Tattooed Portraits: Snapshots,” will no doubt draw on his work experience and include honest portraits of tattooed patrons as well as tattoo artists. AM recently swung through the Merry Karnowsky Gallery to take in “Gameland,” the debut Los Angeles solo show from Chilean artist Victor Castillo. Castillo was in town from Barcelona (where he now lives) for the opening, and he filled all the rooms of Karnowsky’s beautiful space, really showcasing the various characters all have come to love in his work. This Friday in San Diego, Kelly Vivanco returns after her highly successful solo outing at Thinkspace in Los Angeles. Subtext welcomes Kelly along with the up and coming Jason Limon. The botanical aspects in both artists’ work seems to be one of the main unifying themes in the show and their works play off each other nicely. AM stopped by Gallery 1988 in LA a couple days ago to attend the Travis Louieâ€™s (interviewed) book signing. His book “Curiosities,” released by Baby Tattoo Books & Galley 1988, chronicles his paintings from the last several years and of course, the stories that go along with it.
