Daniel Danger and Dan McCarthy (interviewed) had a successful opening this past weekend at Gallery 1988’s San Francisco location. With many of the originals and prints long sold out before the opening, “The Watcher in the Woods” has proven to be quite an accomplishment for these two artists in their West Coast debut. Teaser: Gary Baseman – “La Noche de la Fusion” @ Corey Helford

Pervasive artist Gary Baseman, will be opening his next solo show at Corey Helford Gallery on May 2nd.  This show is influenced by Brazil’s Carnival and will feature paintings and sculptures introducing his Carnival Girls and ChouChou Buddha.  Sounds fun as there will be an outdoor festival with live performances, music and costumes.  We also hear there might be some body painting? A video of Baseman at Carnival last year after the jump…

Mark Ryden’s First Toy – YHWH

Here is the first photo we have seen of Mark Ryden’s first ever toy – YHWH.  The figure is titled after one of his paintings (seen after the jump) and also cleverly posed with a little girl as in the painting.  Not sure what it is meant to be but one definition of YHWH is the God of the Old Testament as transliterated from Hebrew consonants.  Perhaps it’s Ryden’s vision of the Almighty, at least in the world of his paintings. The figure will come […]

Openings: Todd Schorr – “The World We Live In” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Todd Schorr’s (interviewed) opening last night at Merry Karnowsky was a star-studded event with both celebrity collectors, artists, and paparazzi in full force. You know you aren’t at a normal art event when you are greeted with a red carpet on entrance, and when only media members were allowed to snap pictures. Thankfully, when it was all said and done, the art was the true star of the event. Schorr’s body of work entitled “The World We Live In” delighted viewers with it’s concepts, magnitude, […]

Openings: Joseph “2H” McSween @ Ronin Gallery

Last night marked the opening of Joseph “2H” McSween’s (interviewed) debut Los Angeles solo at the Ronin Gallery. 2H delighted the enthused crowd with a body of work featuring his intriguing female subjects and a vibrant eight foot acrylic and spray paint mural on the gallery’s main wall. AM was impressed with the execution of the pieces, a true testament to 2H’s tremendous artistic and technical growth over the past year. From the piercing eyes of his girls, to the fine balance of colors and […]

Releases: James Jean – Sally Jupiter (Watchmen) Print

James Jean (interviewed) has this up for sale, a presumably open edition print of Sally Jupiter of an image he created for the Watchmen movie. Although we are still not sure if Warner Bros was behind the Watchmen graffiti that went up in advance of the movie release, they do get credit for recognizing the talent an artist we know and love.  The print is 17 x 22″ and priced at $85. Some concept drawings as well as a screen shot of one of the […]
