Upcoming: James Jean – “Azimuth” @ Kaikai Kiki Gallery

On April 6th, James Jean (interviewed) will be opening a new show in Tokyo at Kaikai Kiki Gallery. Continuing to work with Takashi Murakami to present his work to Japanese collectors (see 2015), the American artist has prepared a series of new works collectively entitled Azimuth. One of the highlights will certainly be some new stained glass works (the triptych Portals seen here) that Jean recently revealed last weekend. Photo credit: Brandon Shigeta and the artist. Streets: Andrew Hem (Italy)

A few months ago in Italy, Andrew Hem (interviewed) spent some time painting a stunning new mural for the Memorie Urbane. The multi-story piece created over several days in Fondi features one of his characters painted in his usual cartoonish style with what appear to be references to paintings of religious symbolism and iconography. Showing at the just opened Creatura House in Seattle, Travis Louie (interviewed) currently has a small selection of paintings and drawings on view. Entitled The Present Past, the exhibition at the former Roq La Rue owner Kirsten Anderson’s new gallery features Louie’s depiction of endangered animals in his vintage photo-like Victorian style. Yoskay Yamamoto // Facebook Artist In Residence Program

Recently, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) became the latest to go through the FB AIR Program. The artist-in-residence initiative saw the Los Angeles-based artist set up one of his signature clustered installations in one of Facebook’s new offices on the Palo Alto campus. Featuring a series of patterned paintings inspired by the LA sky, sculptural pieces, and hanging elements, Cali Sunset was a welcome addition to the creative work environment. This morning, Dabs Myla kicked off a 72 hour period in which you can order their Alphabet Paper Studies through their web store. Each piece is hand painted to order allowing collectors to buy multiples letters for initials, names, or anything at all. Also, each letter will have unique variances so that they are all one of a kind. Sized at 5″ x 7″, the acrylic on paper paintings will cost $300 each. Discuss Dabs Myla here.

With this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii fast approaching, it’s time to preview the annual associated Exploring The New Contemporary Movement group exhibition (see 2017 & 2016 & 2015 & 2014) curated by Thinkspace. The fifth iteration of the group exhibition will open on February 11th and will once again be held at the Honolulu Museum of Art School, featuring a larger 24″ x 24″ format.
