Preview: “Go Get Your Shinebox” @ Brooklynite Gallery

Brooklynite Gallery has a pretty interesting show opening on the 21st of this month entitled “Go Get Your Shinebox.” Artists were asked to create their vision of what a “shoeshine box” was, the simplest way to make a living during the economic downturn and perhaps even take a step further to create “survival boxes.” With such a open ended theme show, you can expect a varied response with boxes of all shapes and sizes. After previewing some of Nicoletta Ceccoli’s (interviewed) pieces in the fantastic upcoming three-person show at Copro Gallery, we turn to Amy Sol (interviewed) and her “Wilderness Buffet.” She’ll be bringing some of her largest works to date as well as some hand finished prints for her part in this Saturday’s show. On Halloween night, Tony Shafrazi Gallery hosted the solo exhibition (previewed) of Low Brow icon Robert Williams. Openings: “The Kids Are Alright” @ LeBasse Projects

We were pleasantly surprised the other day when we stopped by for the opening of Nate Frizzell’s show at LeBasse Projects. Showing concurrently in the smaller gallery was “The Kids Are Alright,” essentially the younger up-and-coming talent of the LeBasse family – artists like Dominique Fung, Jeremy Asher Lynch, and Nimit Malavia. Releases: Joe Sorren – “Mr. Kurabi’s Tales of Lovely-ness and All Things Eaten” Bronze Sculpture

Remember when we showed you the initial sculpt for a beautiful new bronze from Joe Sorren. Well, the final sculpt and patina has been revealed for “Mr. Kurabi’s Tales of Lovely-ness and All Things Eaten,” Sorren’s first sculpture release in three years. Measuring 14″ high and mounted on a handmade 360 degree wooden swivel stand, the limited edition (24) piece is available exclusively through Joshua Liner Gallery, the site of Sorren’s show in March. They have teamed up to to produce a limited edition “Super Size Me” figure from English, but this time, a Halloween skeletalÂ edition.Â The figure comes in two colors and will be available from Armth. As we mentioned yesterday, Ron English (featured) is looking for “cowgirls” for a special performance during the opening of his “Immortal Underground” exhibition.Â Just half a year after his solo at Elms Lester (covered) and curating the “Nimbus Vapor” show (covered) earlier this month, he’s back with a new body of work on November 12th at the Opera Gallery in New York. We can’t seem to get enough of Tara McPherson and Molly Crabapple since drawing along side them at Baby Tattooville in the Riverside Art Museum (covered). So, AM decided to stop by and get in a little schooling with a special edition of NYC’s Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School featuring none other than our friend Tara McPherson.Â For this special session a “life drawing” model was transformed into a beautiful & seductive “Lonely Heart” siren.
