Armory Week ’12: Scope Art Fair

One of the mainstay satellite fairs during Armory Week is the Scope Art Fair. This year’s edition rocked a new location just blocks from the main Armory Art Show (here & here) and gained some fresh galleries go along with its revamped look. As with most fairs we caught works by artists from around the globe and we also ran into a few familiar faces to go along with the infusion of new blood. Check it out after the jump.

Preview: “Hookers” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Tomorrow night, March 31st, in Culver City, Natalia Fabia (interviewed) will be curating a show at the Corey Helford Gallery entitled Hookers. Drawing from her longstanding fascination with the world’s oldest profession, artists like Kent Williams, Michael Hussar, Phil Hale, Erik Sandberg, Saber, REVOK, and more have been instructed to produced similarly inspired work for the exhibition. Openings: “Juxtapoz Turns 18” @ Copro Gallery

Last weekend in Santa Monica, Juxtapoz celebrated 18 years of sharing art with the masses with a group exhibition at the Copro Gallery. Jeff Soto (interviewed) has something new for his fans out there. Openings: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Jokes On Me…” @ LeBasse Projects (Chinatown)

Last Saturday night, the LeBasse Projects in the heart of LA’s Chinatown hosted a new solo show from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed). Jokes On Me… was a sculptural extravaganza with some of Yoskay’s favorite toys customized (utilizing plaster, resin, vinyl, clay and wood) with his signature facial expressions and other modifications. Openings: Alex Gross – “Product Placement” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Opening alongside Victor Castillo last month at Jonathan LeVine was Los Angeles-based artist Alex Gross (interviewed). Entitled Product Placement, the show presented a new series of paintings that expands on the themes from his prior work such as Consumption, Branding, Celebrity, Love and Mortality. Using refined strokes and techniques, Gross skillfully rendered mundane objects and mixed them into a world where luxury brands are the common focus of his alluring subjects. Openings: “Love & Hate” @ StolenSpace

Last month, the StolenSpace Gallery in London hosted a show that opened around Valentine’s Day appropriate to the theme entitled Love & Hate. For the group exhibition, most artists created two works, one for each of the strong emotions that often seems linked hand in hand depending on the situation.
