Ron English – “Short Shelf Life”

In a similar vein to street pranksters TrustoCorp’s product rebranding campaigns, some new items made it onto the grocery racks courtesy of Ron English (featured). While in Venice, California for his show that just opened at the Post No Bills gallery (covered), the self-proclaimed disseminator of “popoganda” also made time to drop off some modified cereal boxes for local shoppers at a Ralph’s to chance upon. If you happen to find one yourself, send it to Ron and he’ll sign it for you. Discuss Ron […]

PULSE Los Angeles ’11: LeBasse Projects

Another pitstop for the AM crew several weeks ago as we walked PULSE Los Angeles was the booth housing the offerings from LeBasse Projects. For their part in the art fair, the gallery brought with them paintings from Nate Frizzell (interviewed), Katrin Fridriks, and Joshua Petker as well as some sculptures. Take a look at more photos taken for us by Carlos Gonzalez after the jump…

Openings: “Abstractions” @ Opera Gallery

AM recently attended the opening of Abstractions at New York’s Opera Gallery. The special group show housed two separate groups of artists. The first was a retrospective from the old school abstract movement from the 1940 to present day. Original works from artists such as Miro, Francis, Soulages, Hartung, Fontana, Arman and Matta were on display. This contrasted with the second group of names from today’s artistic movement like Rostarr, Bast, Ron English, Saber and more who have evolved in their own form of abstraction. […]

Streets: Ron English – Barracuda Wall (Los Angeles)

Just a few hours before his latest show at Post No Bills gallery (covered), Ron English (featured) took the time to adorned the fame Barracuda wall with his signature style. The wall which sits near the intersection of Melrose and Fairfax features four different images which touch upon the satirical aspect of English’s artwork. It also features a variety of pasters which are now showing up all across the city of Los Angeles. More photos after the jump…

Baby Tattooville ’11: Art Jam (Final)

As veterans of the annual Baby Tattooville art retreat know, how the final Art Jam collaborative painting ends up looking is nothing like how it starts. This year was no different as the 30 artists in attendance put their mark on the extra large canvas to accommodate the reunion year. The final composition was surprisingly pretty balanced despite the inevitable drama that develops in the process, perhaps in no small part due to the leadership skills of Captain Jeff Soto (interviewed). More photos after the jump […]

Teaser: Andy Kehoe – “Arise, Feral Night” @ Roq La Rue

We were browsing the always excellent Erratic Phenomena recently and came across this painting from Andy Kehoe where one of his creatures gaze out into the cosmos. If this painting and the title of the show, Arise, Feral Night, is any indication, then darkness has indeed fallen over the autumnal world of the Pittsburgh-based painter. The show opens October 14th at Roq La Rue. Discuss this show here. Discuss Andy Kehoe here.

Interviews: Martin Wittfooth – “The Passions” @ Lyons Wier Gallery

As we perused the preview images for Martin Wittfooth’s upcoming solo in New York at the Lyons Wier Gallery, we couldn’t help but think that he had elevated his painting to the next level with this new body of work. After seeing one powerful image after another, we sat down to put some questions to the Brooklyn-based artist about The Passions scheduled to open on October 13th. We talked about the symbolism in his work, which is evident as you encounter unforgettable images like a […]

Baby Tattooville ’11: Michael Hussar – “Wunderland”

For the third straight year (see 2010), one of the featured artists, Michael Hussar, hosted the strictly adult-oriented portion of Baby Tattooville – Wunderland. As before, all of the action took place in Hussar’s suite where in the main room, models posed on a large bed as muses for Hussar & other artist’s drawings and for impromptu photo sessions (see above with Ron English). The fun also continued in the second room where attendees and artists mingled. Some were able to meet for the first […]
