Last month, White Walls Gallery in San Francisco opened a group exhibition entitled Space//Squared. Curated by Sven Davis, the showing was a followup to an event last year in Portland (covered). This time around, participating artists were again asked to contribute artwork in a 10 x 10″ format. Along with pieces from over 100 artists (list seen below), Adam Friedman and Robert Minervini also created a site-specific installation featuring a series of paintings interspersed throughout mural elements. Showing: Mario Wagner – “A Glow That Transfers Creativity” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Last week, the Hashimoto Contemporary welcomed Bay Area artist Mario Wagner (featured) into their space for a showing entitled A Glow That Transfers Creativity. The solo exhibition consisted of paintings, collage-based installation, and animations displayed on old tube televisions. Taking a mixed media approach, the German born artist reinterprets images he finds in a variety of methods resulting in a style that is both retro and futuristic at the same time. Mario Wagner recently completed his third installation for hotel and supporter of the creative arts The Standard. The huge image itself is a retro-futuristic landscape in classic Wagner stylings with imposing architectural elements devoid of any central characters. Here’s where the fun starts though – this installation in Downtown LA has an aspect that is new to us as it is an interactive “Living Collage,” meaning visitors first photograph themselves using the SNAPS app then insert themselves as characters into the image. Last month, the Breeze Block Gallery hosted new work from the Bay Area-based Mario Wagner collectively entitled Controlled Spaces. Filling the main space of the Portland Gallery, the new mixed media pieces feature Wagner’s structural landscapes that have a kind of sci-fi and cinematic feel to them, all utilizing a minimalistic palette. From UFO’s, otherworldly imagery, to hooded characters, the work really makes the viewer’s imagination run wild trying to imagine the back stories to the scenarios that are presented. Berkeley based artist Mario Wagner builds his worlds to incorporate a level of cinematic intrigue through the retro futurist sci-fi imagery that speaks to the era from which he draws reference – a time when futuristic fascination was widespread, space travel was imminent, and the possibilities of technology were limitless. Breeze Block Gallery opened their huge group show Wider than a postcard (previewed) alongside the first solo show in their new gallery 2 space – olive47’s bonita bonita (featured) a couple of weeks back to a packed Portland crowd. Over 400 individual works went into the postcard show with 200 artists providing postcard sized works. The work was hung on the walls in grids of 24 cards, each echoing the aspect ratio of the individual works themselves as each work was 6×4 inches. The variance of work encompassed photography […]

On the back of his Space//Form group exhibition last year (covered), Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis is working with Breeze Block Gallery in Portland again on another huge group event entitled Wider than a postcard.
