Mark Dean Veca – “Le Poppy Den” @ David B. Smith Gallery

Last month, the David B. Smith Gallery gave Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) the go ahead to create a site specific installation in one of the rooms of their Denver showspace. Much like his showing last year at the Orange County Musuem of Art (covered), the LA-based artist created a space, dubbed Le Poppy Den this time, where attendees could be fully immersed in his signature “Toile de Jouy” like patterns. Check out a few more photos below… Discuss Mark Dean Veca here.

Showing: “Kobe Prelude Experience” @ Nike Vault

While we may not have gotten to see much of Kobe Bryant this season, we still have the chance to see what is probably the greatest display of artwork showcasing moments in the Laker great’s career. A while back, we covered the beginning of the eight part series and then followed up with a notice for the last discussion of the series. Now that all eight paintings have been unveiled, we went down to Nike Vault to see the display in its entirety. We have heard […]

Streets: World Roundup (Oct 21 – Oct 27)

This week’s Streets World Roundup is headlined by the latest piece from Banksy during his month long artist residency on the streets of New York. Painted on Day 28 of the project, this wall in Coney Island muses on what a robot would paint if he was to do graffiti. Take a look at other murals you may have missed from Mr. B earlier in the month here. Other notable walls come from ABOVE – Canada, Mark Jenkins – Germany, Mark Dean Veca – Los […]

Showing: Mark Dean Veca – “Year of the Snake” @ SiTE:LAB (ArtPrize)

The Los Angeles-based Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) recently traveled to Michigan to create an installation for this year’s ArtPrize competition. The site-specific immersive installation entitled Year of the Snake transforms the Grand Hall of the old Public Museum of Grand Rapids with his signature imagery. The concept behind the work featuring a printed vinyl floor and hand-painted walls is a riff on this year’s Chinese Zodiac and that fact that the space is actually going through a transformation, like the shedding of a snake’s skin. For those interested, head over here […]

Openings: “California-Pacific Triennial” @ OCMA

Over the weekend, AM stopped by the Orange County Musuem of Art to take a look at the 2013 California-Pacific Triennial that just opened, in particular Mark Dean Veca’s (interviewed) installation. Along with some paintings he submitted, the Los Angeles-based artist also painted a room with his signature patterns and added some interesting adornments. Take a look at some of the work from the rest of the artists as well as more shots of Mark’s contributions. Photo credit: James Ng for Arrested Motion. Discuss Mark Dean Veca here.
