Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be holding their Five Year Anniversary Group Exhibition this Saturday with many of the artists that we have grown to love over the last half decade. Western Project kicked opened the doors on Jan 16, 2010 at their new location in Culver City on La Cienega with a group show (previewed) featuring spectacular artwork by Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) and artists Justin Bower, Sush Machida Gaikotsu, Patrick Lee, Russ Meyer, and Liz Young which runs until Feb. 20. After an impressive showing at Jonathan LeVine in September, Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) starts off 2010 with a group show. “Cherry Pie” opens on January 16th at Western Project in their new location with Justin Bower, Sush Machida Gaikotsu, Patrick Lee, Russ Meyer, and Liz Young along with MDV adding to his pop iconography library with his rendition of Mr. Monopoly. Most of you have probably see Mark Dean Veca’s (interviewed) iconic Popeye image, perhaps from the large mural he did in his big retrospective exhibition at UCSD last January.  What you may not have seen though is the spinach-loving sailor’s entire crew including Bluto, Olive Oyl, Sweat Pea, and Wimpy rendered in Mark’s signature psychedelic and visceral “Toile de Jouy” patterns. Openings: “Celeritas” @ SURU

The motorcycle culture themed “Celeritas” show (previewed) and silent auction held last weekend at SURU in Los Angeles was a huge success, raising $66,000 for Riders for Health, a non-profit that funds the transportation of medical personnel to remote communities in Africa. The centerpiece of the show was a 2009 Suzuki Hayabusa customized by Barry McGee coupled with a mannequin draped in styling Darren Romanelli fashioned motorcycle leathers.
