Basel Week Miami ’12: Hush

While in town for Basel Week Miami, the UK-based Hush (interviewed) spent some time working on some murals with his signature East meets West urban imagery. The main wall was adjacent to the pool at Boulon South Beach, luxury condominiums in the Collins Park Neighborhood. Hush also had some paintings showing at the Corey Helford Gallery booth at PULSE. Basel Week Miami ’12: David Kordansky Gallery @ Art Basel

One of the galleries with the best and largest stables of young artists that every collector keeps an eye out for every year at Art Basel Miami Beach is David Kordansky Gallery. The Culver City, CA stalwart represented Los Angeles’ talked-about art scene to the fullest with great pieces by such coveted artists as Aaron Curry, Kathryn Andrews, Valentin Carron, and Mai-Thu Perret. Basel Week Miami ’12: PULSE – Highlights

Another strong fair we visited while we were enjoying Basel Week Miami was PULSE. Featuring many galleries and artists that we were familiar with, it was a nice stroll catching up with them as well as learning about some new artists. Basel Week Miami ’12 / Streets: Meggs x Phibs

While roaming the streets during Basel Week Miami, AM came across our old friends from POW WOW, Meggs and Phibs working on a massive collaborative mural. Situated in the Wynwood Walls district, the piece featured Meggs’ phoenix and flames combined with Phibs characteristic patterns. Stop by to see it for yourself if you are in Miami. Basel Week Miami ’12: Cheim & Read @ Art Basel

With a hugely popular retrospective that just closed at the Berkeley Art Museum, Barry McGee exhibited two new pieces with his new New York gallery Cheim and Read in its booth at Art Basel Miami Beach. A gigantic skull painting by Donald Baechler was another highlight, as it stared blankly at fair-goers. Basel Week Miami ’12: Marian Goodman @ Art Basel

Flanked on two walls by monumental works by Gerhard Richter and Julie Mehretu, Marian Goodman Gallery’s booth at Art Basel Miami Beach provided spectacular viewing for all that visited its booth. Art market man of the year Gerhard Richter’s striped piece was from his series using a digital process and provided a taste for those that missed his most recent show with Goodman. Without a doubt the sun of the art fair solar system that is Basel Week Miami is Art Basel. Concentrating on just this fair and dedicating our energy to catching it in its entirety including the two hundred plus blue chip galleries present took AM two full days (see day one). Basel Week Miami ’12 / Streets: JR x André

Continuing our survey of the streets in Miami, another interesting wall was collaboratively worked on by JR (featured) and André. The two French street artists combined their two styles – the signature photographic eye from JR and the stick figures of André – into a welcome addition to the Design District. AM found time to visit another fair in Midtown Miami, the inaugural Miami Project earlier this week. Unlike most new fairs, we were impressed by their solid lineup of respected galleries and great facilities. This is perhaps this is due to the experience of the fair’s organizers, artMRKT Productions, who have already held fairs Houston, San Francisco, and the Hamptons. Those who passed by the Overtown area of Miami while in the city for Basel Week Miami will no doubt have seen RISK’s deconstructive color washes on many of the buildings in the area. Using the area as his personal canvas, the LA-based writer has enlisted many of his friends for collaborative murals including Shepard Fairey in the piece seen above.
