Japan’s Mizuma gallery made quite a splash at this year’s Armory, selling out most of the art they imported from the land of the rising sun. As usual, their booth was filled with some of Japan’s notables: Akino Kondoh, Sashie Masakatsu, Makoto Aida, Aoyama Satoru, andÂ Tanada Koji to name a few. The ARMORY Art Show as it’s name implies, was literally a stockpile of the art world’s heavy artillery. With works from Damien Hirst, Yoshitomo Nara, Kara Walker, Kenny Scharf, Kehinde Wiley, Gilbert & George, Julian Opie, Marilyn Minters, Tom Sachs and many more, the stockade of high caliber art stretched the imagination. Preview: Hisashi Tenmyouya @ Mizuma Gallery

On October 15, Tokyo’s Mizuma Gallery will open Fighting Spirit, a new show by one of contemporary Japanese art’s shooting stars, Hisashi Tenmyouya. Tenmyouya’s work fuses Western pop culture (e.g., hip-hop, video games, movies) with Japanese traditional themes and techniques, comparable perhaps to what Kehinde Wiley does with African American culture and classical European art. For Fighting Spirit, Tenmyouya will be showing eight new paintings, including his largest work to date, in addition to works on paper. The show runs through Nov. 15.
