Art HK ’11: Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin

As you knew from our teaser article, we were looking forward to the Emmanuel Perrotin booth at Art Hong Kong because of what KAWS had to offer.  But, turns out the gallery was showing many other artists from their roster including AM favorites like Takashi Murakami, Mr., Chiho Aoshima, and Aya Takano among many others. Todd Selby Visits Mr.’s Studio and Home

Our friends at TWBE let us know about photographer Todd Selby’s latest photo-documentation of artists within their spaces, this time with Mr., one of Takashi Murakami’s protégés. Selby had a chance to photograph the eccentric Japanese artist in his studio and home outside of Tokyo. Obviously, Mr.’s fascination with anime and manga is not contained to his art, as he surrounds himself with illustrated books, posters, and pillows, both at work and at home. In addition, Selby captures other intriguing images, such as production sketches […]

Frieze Art Fair

Frieze Art Fair takes place every October in Regent’s Park, London and this year, over 60,000 people step through the doors to take in all the art on display. There were signs of renewed confidence in the market as there appeared to be increased buying in the under $1 million range, but higher priced works still were not moving well. The good news for those who were only there to window shop last week was the fact that there was plenty of nice art to […]

Openings: “Sacred Monsters” @ Tufts University Art Gallery

We can’t be EVERYWHERE at once. Fortunately, AM has friends who enjoy art as much as we do. Last Thursday, Josh Liner played correspondent for us and trekked up to Boston to attended “Sacred Monsters” (previewed) at Tufts University Art Gallery. The show showcases some “young guns” of the Japanese art scene – Mr., Chiho Aoshima, Tomokazu (Matsu) Matsuyama’s (interviewed), Oscar, Kenjiro Kitade, Tokyo Kamen, Mahomi Kunikata, Nobuhiro Ishihara and Saito Oiwa. These eight notable mid-career artist have tackled numerous mediums with much success and Tufts […]

NYC’s pre-Thanksgiving art feast

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and AM is already in a festive (read: tongue-in-cheek) mood thinking about the bountiful meal that is the main attraction of the holiday. But even with our mind turning to delicious turkey and pie, we can’t resist the cornucopia of artistic delights being generously offered this November by the galleries of New York City. Let’s give thanks for the three-course feast for the eyes we are about to receive, after the jump.

Openings: MR. @ Emmanuel Perrotin (Paris)

Kaikai Kiki artist Mr. opened his show “Nobody Dies” a week ago at Emmanuel Perrotin (Paris). This protégé of Takashi Murakami is known for his obviously anime influenced paintings of innocent children in adult situations (not an uncommon theme for Japanese artists it seems).  Looks like in this show, he tackles themes of war and child soldiers.  More photos of the opening after the jump.

New Mr. and Chiho Aoshima prints

Takashi Murakami‘s company, Kaikai Kiki, had announced the release of new limited edition offset prints by Japanese pop artists Mr. and Chiho Aoshima. As the announcement was made on Kaikai Kiki’s Japanese-language Web site, the details are not clear. AM believes that the sales will be conducted by lottery, and that the sign up for the lottery runs from today through October 12 (Japanese time). If you are lucky enough to be reading this from Japan or to know someone there who can hook you […]
