Showing: Morgan Blair – “I’m Holding A Sword. And An Axe. I’m Gonna Do Nothing” @ The Hole

A few days ago in New York, The Hole opened up a new exhibition from Morgan Blair entitled I’m Holding A Sword. And An Axe. I’m Gonna Do Nothing. Like many young artists, her work is informed by internet culture, where she sources her imagery for her abstract paintings as well as where she draws from to create the long nonsensical titles to her pieces (like for one above – Broth Was the First to Abandon Our Commonly Held Ethos Around the Mini Bekeychained Bottles of Extra Virgin […]

Streets: Shepard Fairey (New York)

Shepard Fairey (interviewed) recently unveiled a mural featuring his iconic imagery on the rooftop of Great Bowery, a fashion and art agency collective in Manhattan. Wrapped around a water tower (one of our favorite things to see painted), the piece entitled Power & Equality was meant to celebratet the LES Girls Club and board member Rosario Dawson for everything they do in the neighborhood. The project brings things full circle for Shep as he was one of the young vandals to tag up the landmark graffiti spot back in […]

A mural high up on the gallery walls rendered with contrasting colors and including Stark’s signature drips rounds out the […]

After an inaugural showing last year in Los Angeles (covered), it was only a matter of time before the BEYOND THE STREETS  hit what many consider one of the birth places of graffiti in the US. New York’s version of the exhibition (curated by Roger Gastman) celebrating graffiti, street art, and beyond once again featured a stunning roster of some of the most well known and seminal artists in the genre. Ranging from paintings, sculptures, photography, mural art to site-specific installations from 100+ artists, posting all the photos […]

Showing: Jose Parla – “Anonymous Vernacular” @ Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery

A couple weeks ago, Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in New York opened up a solo show from Jose Parla entitled Anonymous Vernacular. One of the things that stands out to us about the Cuban-American artist’s work are the rich textures and complex layers he creates in each of his pieces, a collage of oil paints, graffiti inspired scrawl, acrylic finishes, and torn advertisments. Along with fourteen gritty new paintings, the Brooklyn-based artist has also included a reworked found object sculpture that speaks to the issue of homelessness. He further states – […]

Participants includes: Adam Parker Smith, Alan Resnick, Anne Vieux, Ara Peterson, Ben […]

Entitled Anonymous Vernacular, the new body of work will include pieces that combine a collage of fragmented advertising posters he has collected with his signature calligraphic urban scrawl. Rounding out the show will be a sculpture piece that pays homage to those who live on the streets collecting bottles from all over the borough to turn in at the local recycling center. He further […]
