Previews: Erin M. Riley – “Used Tape” @ P·P·O·W

Tonight in New York, P·P·O·W will be hosting the opening of a new solo from Erin M. Riley (interviewed) entitled Used Tape. Continuing to tackle issues that have become even more timely in this #metoo era, the Brooklyn-based artist uses her weaving skills to depict imagery that pushing the boundaries of the traditional medium. Showing: Mark Whalen – “Grab Bag” @ Arsham/Fieg Gallery

Arsham/Fieg Gallery in New York currently has a show from Mark Whalen on display entitled Grab Bag. The towering stack pieces are examples of the increasing more sculptural work that he has been experimenting with recently. Whalen further explains – “Lately, I have been formulating new relationships with sculptural work. Grab Bag is a new series of multi-dimensional work that presents non-traditional totems representing life’s folly. The result is familiar juxtapositions of materials, found objects, and everyday stockpiles.” Discuss Mark Whalen here.

Showing: Inka Essenhigh @ Miles McEnery Gallery

Currently on view until May 25th at Miles McEnery Gallery in New York is a new selection of works from Inka Essenhigh. Returning to the medium of enamel, the locally-based artist has created surreal paintings that continue her imagery of flora and fauna frolicking in the woods, with a hint of inclusion of urban elements. Abstract and figurative at the same time, the cartoonish renderings feature a psychedelic Fantasia-like aesthetic that take the viewer into a different world. Photos via the gallery. Openings: Mark Drew – “What Goes On?” @ Spoke Art (New York)

Earlier this month, Spoke Art’s New York location hosted the opening of Mark Drew’s new solo show. Entitled What Goes On?, the new body of work continues the Tokyo-based artist’s signature juxtaposition of Peanuts comics and 90s rap lyrics. The mashup of hip hop bars with Snoopy & gang by the Australian artist takes two presumably familiar elements for the viewer and generates a new refreshing point of view and interpretation. Frieze Week NYC ’18: First Look

With the Frieze Art Fair opening in New York this week, AM made the trek out to Randall’s Island to see what the contemporary art world had to offer. Featuring 190 galleries from 30 countries and a new layout, the event certainly had something for all art lovers out there, no matter their taste. Here is a first look at some of the artists, works, and booths that caught our eye as we braved the heat to bring photos for your perusal.

Previews: Mark Drew – “What Goes On?” @ Spoke Art (New York)

On May 5th, Spoke Art’s New York location will be opening a new solo show from Mark Drew entitled What Goes On? The new body of work continues the Tokyo-based Australian artist’s instantly recognizable mashups of Peanuts comics and 90s rap lyrics, like the painting seen above featuring the rhymes of Nas. That piece, Maintain (Nas), will also released as a limited edition screen print and be available in person at the opening. Streets: Peanuts Global Artist Collective (New York)

As mentioned in our introduction to the Peanuts Global Artist Collective earlier this month, murals featuring the work of some of the participating artists were unveiled in New York. Painted on the side of downtown office buildings on the West Side near Hudson Square, imagery inspired by Charles M. Schulz’s famous comic strip could be seen by passerby’s from Mr. A (seen above), AVAF, FriendsWithYou, Kenny Scharf, Tomokazu Matsuyama, and Rob Pruitt. Openings: Takashi Murakami – “HEADS↔HEADS” @ Galerie Perrotin (New York)

Taking over three floors of Galerie Perrotin’s New York LES location, Takashi Murakami’s latest show was unveiled last night to the delight of his fans. Entitled HEADS↔HEADS, the body of work on display was dominated by a series of paintings inspired by the work of Francis Bacon as well as a monumental 33 feet long piece that was a homage to Japanese artist Soga Shohaku. Coming up on April 28th, Galerie Perrotin’s New York location will be hosting the opening of HEADS↔HEADS, the latest solo from Takashi Murakami. Spanning three floors of the space, the exhibition from the Japanese artist will include a new series of paintings inspired by the work of Francis Bacon as well as Transcendent Attacking a Whirlwind, a 33 feet long piece adorned with gold and platinum leaf that is a homage to Japanese artist Soga Shohaku.
