Frieze Week NYC ’12: Pulse Art Fair – First Look

With our overview of the main fair done, we now move on to the satellite fairs of Frieze week in New York. The Pulse fair was held at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea and featured sixty national and international galleries, presenting exhibitions that span across all media, from works on paper, painting, and sculpture, to performance, installation, and video art. Openings: Ryan McGinley – “Animals” @ Team Gallery NY

Last week, photographer Ryan McGinley opened shows simultaneously at Team Gallery’s two New York locations entitled Animals & Grids. We will focus first on the showing on Grand Street where McGinley continued his portraiture featuring nude models interacting with live animals. The artist visited various sanctuaries, zoos, and rescue establishments across the United States, erecting a mobile studio where he collaborated with animal trainers to pose subjects (animal and humans) in bizarrely seductive and symbiotic compositions. Last weekend, Kehinde Wiley opened his latest solo exhibition at the Sean Kelly Gallery in New York entitled An Economy of Grace. This comes on the heels of the gifted painter’s ongoing showing at The Jewish Museum of New York, giving fans in the Big Apple two venues to enjoy his large-scale and urban-chic paintings. Video: Prune Nourry – “Holy Holi”

As we mentioned earlier, The Invisible Dog Art Center in Brooklyn will play host to an exhibition entitled Holy River by Prune Nourry which is the culmination of a three year project on gender selection in India. As part of the show, The New York-based multidisciplinary artist, who draws much of her inspiration from bioethics, used the element of water for the focal point in this hypnotic video. One of the more highly anticipated shows at the end of the year will be Jeremy Geddes’ (interviewed) solo at Jonathan LeVine. Fans already know that the new body of the work, which will be years in the making by the opening of the show on October 20th, will include the Cluster painting which was revealed earlier this year and also released as a print. Last Friday AM attended a preview of Shepard Fairey’s (featured) solo exhibition Harmony & Discord with blue chip gallery Pace Prints. As shared in our recent studio visit, this epic show was over a year in the making. Utilizing the full gamut of tools & materials from the legendary print facilities, the head of OBEY created some of the most exquisite and beautiful editioned fine art he’s ever crafted. Teaser: Tauba Auerbach – “Float” @ Paula Cooper

Tonight in New York, the Paula Cooper Gallery will be hosting Tauba Auerbach’s first one-person exhibition at the gallery entitled Float. The NY-based artist will be unveiling new Fold paintings alongside a new series of Weave paintings, presented for the first time in the United States. Also on display will be new photographs and sculptural objects, including Onyx, a deconstructed material volume printed and bound in book form. Teaser: 2012 White Columns Benefit Exhibition + Auction

Currently on auction at White Columns are works from over 80 artists to benefit the not-for-profit gallery near the border of West Village and the Meat Packing District in New York. Since 1970, hundreds of artists have benefited from their early exposure and support so head over to view the works on display, which are now available for bidding in a silent auction.
