Streets: Shepard Fairey (New York)

Shepard Fairey (interviewed) recently unveiled a mural featuring his iconic imagery on the rooftop of Great Bowery, a fashion and art agency collective in Manhattan. Wrapped around a water tower (one of our favorite things to see painted), the piece entitled Power & Equality was meant to celebratet the LES Girls Club and board member Rosario Dawson for everything they do in the neighborhood. Last month, Jen Stark’s inaugural solo exhibition with Joshua Liner Gallery in New York opened, mesmerizing the attendees with a selection of her rainbow hued, layered, and geometric works. On June 20, Jen Stark inaugural solo exhibition with the Joshua Liner Gallery will open in New York. Coming up next month, Hashimoto Contemporary’s New York space will be hosting a solo showing from Erik Jones entitled Country. Judging from the work-in-progress photos from his studio outside of Chicago, the new body of work will continue his recent series of surreal portraits that treat the extremities and appendages like colorful Gumby-like extensions of the body. A couple weeks ago, Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in New York opened up a solo show from Jose Parla entitled Anonymous Vernacular. One of the things that stands out to us about the Cuban-American artist’s work are the rich textures and complex layers he creates in each of his pieces, a collage of oil paints, graffiti inspired scrawl, acrylic finishes, and torn advertisments. Currently in New York, The Hole has a group exhibition on view entitled POST ANALOG STUDIO, the third installment of their ongoing series of shows examining digital media’s impact on art making. Earlier this week, the West 24th Street location of the Gagosian Gallery in New York opened a solo show from Jonas Wood featuring new paintings and works on paper. The fresh selection of work continues his use of art references, plants, everyday objects, and people in architectural interiors and exteriors, as well as a series of his depictions of pots and ceramic vessels. On April 25th, Jose Parla will be returning to Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in New York for another solo show featuring a series of new paintings and reworked found objects. Entitled Anonymous Vernacular, the new body of work will include pieces that combine a collage of fragmented advertising posters he has collected with his signature calligraphic urban scrawl.
