This Saturday night, March 8th, the Last Rites in New York will be presenting a group exhibition where 40 artists were asked to interpret the gallery’s namesake. Openings: Ludo – “Fruit of the Doom” @ Jonathan LeVine

Jonathan LeVine Gallery is currently showing the NYC debut solo by the French artist Ludo (interviewed). Titled Fruit of the Doom, the show is built around the idea of displaying the results of the human race’s actions in the natural world. With clever manipulation of familiar brand logos and recognizable imagery, subtle use of slogans and statements, the new works stay true to Ludo’s signature concept of morphing natural and man made elements. Combined with his inspiration by the DIY punk/skate culture from the 90s, which is also […]

Last month, AM paid a visit to the Mary Boone Gallery in Chelsea to enjoy new works from Tomoo Gokita. Working exclusively in shades of black and white for this exhibition, the Japanese painter has created a series of textured portraits that pay homage to the “dated archetypes lifted of pulp fiction, Hollywood rags, and film noir” with names like Showgirl, Geisha Girl, A Bathing Beauty, Cocktail Pianist from Acapulco, Daughter of a Fraudster, and A Female Spy. Take a look at our photos below and stop by […]

Streets: Maya Hayuk – Bowery & Houston Mural (Part I)

While New Yorker’s have been hunkering down with the recent cold spell, Maya Hayuk has been doing the opposite while working at the high profile corner of Bowery and Houston. Taking time to step back and analyze her work every now and then, the Brooklyn-based artist creates her vibrant patterns based on her ideas on color theory. The new mural will make a welcome distraction from the dreary winter for NYC art lovers. Stop by for a look yourself if you can, and make sure […]
