Frieze Week NYC ’18: First Look

With the Frieze Art Fair opening in New York this week, AM made the trek out to Randall’s Island to see what the contemporary art world had to offer. Featuring 190 galleries from 30 countries and a new layout, the event certainly had something for all art lovers out there, no matter their taste. Here is a first look at some of the artists, works, and booths that caught our eye as we braved the heat to bring photos for your perusal.

Previews: Mark Drew – “What Goes On?” @ Spoke Art (New York)

On May 5th, Spoke Art’s New York location will be opening a new solo show from Mark Drew entitled What Goes On? The new body of work continues the Tokyo-based Australian artist’s instantly recognizable mashups of Peanuts comics and 90s rap lyrics, like the painting seen above featuring the rhymes of Nas. That piece, Maintain (Nas), will also released as a limited edition screen print and be available in person at the opening. Streets: Peanuts Global Artist Collective (New York)

As mentioned in our introduction to the Peanuts Global Artist Collective earlier this month, murals featuring the work of some of the participating artists were unveiled in New York. Painted on the side of downtown office buildings on the West Side near Hudson Square, imagery inspired by Charles M. Schulz’s famous comic strip could be seen by passerby’s from Mr. A (seen above), AVAF, FriendsWithYou, Kenny Scharf, Tomokazu Matsuyama, and Rob Pruitt. Openings: Takashi Murakami – “HEADS↔HEADS” @ Galerie Perrotin (New York)

Taking over three floors of Galerie Perrotin’s New York LES location, Takashi Murakami’s latest show was unveiled last night to the delight of his fans. Entitled HEADS↔HEADS, the body of work on display was dominated by a series of paintings inspired by the work of Francis Bacon as well as a monumental 33 feet long piece that was a homage to Japanese artist Soga Shohaku. Coming up on April 28th, Galerie Perrotin’s New York location will be hosting the opening of HEADS↔HEADS, the latest solo from Takashi Murakami. Spanning three floors of the space, the exhibition from the Japanese artist will include a new series of paintings inspired by the work of Francis Bacon as well as Transcendent Attacking a Whirlwind, a 33 feet long piece adorned with gold and platinum leaf that is a homage to Japanese artist Soga Shohaku. Tomorrow night (April 20th) in Brooklyn, Lydia Fong, Todd James, Steve Powers, and Alicia McCarthy will be putting on a show at Muddguts. For those in the know, as well as from the artwork used to promote the exhibition, it looks like Fong (aka Barry McGee) will be joining his Street Market buddies James and Powers and has invited his Mission School art movement colleague McCarthy to the party as well. Avery Singer’s Days of the Week (Computer Pain) is showing through the end of this week at the 439 W. 127th Street location of Gavin Brown’s Enterprise in New York. Choosing a spoken word song Stretching it Wider from John Giorno as the backdrop for this new body of work, the locally-based artist has created seven large canvases for each day of the week to headline the exhibition. After sharing one of the pieces yesterday that Pejac painted while in New York recently, we now have photos of the other brilliant piece he created in Bushwick (27 Scott Ave). Opening tonight at the 976 Madison Avenue location of Gagosian Gallery in New York will be the first survey of prints from Jonas Wood.
