On Friday night, March 30th, Pace Primitive in New York will be hosting the opening of Ryan McGinness’ newest solo show entitled Geometric Primitives. The title of the show plays off a term used in computer graphics, which is part of NYC-based artist’s process, that refer the smallest and irreducible geometric elements that the system can handle such as lines, circles, curves, and polygons. Opening alongside Victor Castillo last month at Jonathan LeVine was Los Angeles-based artist Alex Gross (interviewed). Entitled Product Placement, the show presented a new series of paintings that expands on the themes from his prior work such as Consumption, Branding, Celebrity, Love and Mortality. Using refined strokes and techniques, Gross skillfully rendered mundane objects and mixed them into a world where luxury brands are the common focus of his alluring subjects. Through this weekend, the walls at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be displaying the surreal paintings of Victor Castillo. Last week, AM attended the much anticipated opening for Kris Kuksi’s latest body of work entitled Triumph. The solo exhibition held at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery was his most impressive yet. Last week, the Brooklyn Museum unveiled a special exhibition entitled Keith Haring: 1978-1982. The amazing retrospective chronicles the specific period of time when Keith Haring left his home of Pennsylvania to attend New York’s School of Visual Arts during which he met friends and peers such as Jean Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf. Haring’s integration and experimentation of both studio and street works are explored through 155 works on paper, seven videos and 150 archival objects – among them sketchbooks, journals, posters and subway drawings. The Armory Art Show (here & here) may be the flagship event of Armory Week in New York, but the most prestigious title this year goes to another. The ADAA Art Show held at the Park Avenue Armory (covered) was a smaller, but more selective fair. Like a small jewelery box, this event drew some of the top galleries from around the nation. Last week, the Suzanne Geiss Company in New York presented their inaugural exhibition RAMMELLZEE: THE EQUATION. Streets: Retna Mural on Bowery & Houston (Part II)

After spending some time with LA artist RETNA (featured) as he put his mark on the iconic Bowery & Houston wall in New York (covered here), AM headed back to see the finishing touches. As you can see, the MSK writer’s calligraphy is getting increasingly complex and is undecipherable for those who aren’t in the know.
