Pulse ’11 – Cindy Wright @ Mark Moore

At this year’s Pulse NYC, LA’s Mark Moore Gallery showcased talented Belgian artist Cindy Wright. Wright’s work seems to follow from the long tradition of Dutch and Flemish still-life paintings, portraying simple objects illuminated upon a dark background. However, Wright’s compositions—like her showstopping painting of a glistening cube of uncooked chunks of bacon or another of a rotting piece of fruit—are at once realistic and abstract, beautiful and hideous, depending on how and from where the pieces are viewed. Take a look at other images […]

Armory ’11 – Hideaki Kawashima @ Richard Heller

We were excited to see three new works by Japanese painter Hideaki Kawashima at this year’s Armory Show, especially because they were at the booth of Los Angeles’ Richard Heller Gallery. Heller previously showed Kawashima along with several other Tomio Koyama Gallery artists as part of a Japanese group show in late 2008; however, we had not heard of Kawashima showing with Heller or any other U.S. gallery since then. The three new paintings at Heller’s Armory booth, although instantly recognizable as being by Kawashima, […]

Volta ’11 – Jim Houser @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s entry to this year’s VOLTA art fair during this year’s Armory Week was artist Jim Houser. The Philly-based artist was in full effect as he brought a beautiful collection of fresh works that spanned an array of sizes and mediums. Much like his last show at Subliminal Projects, Mr. Houser took time customizing the booth with his unique installations including his custom soundtrack. Check it out after the jump.

Volta ’11 – Richard Colman @ V1 Gallery

Another great artist to be featured at this year’s VOLTA fair’s solo format was Richard Colman (interviewed). Represented at Copenhagen’s V1 Gallery booth, the San Francisco based artist impressed us with a diverse selection of his signature colorful and geometric works. Check it out after the jump.

Volta ’11 – Mark Jenkins @ Carmichael Gallery

VOLTA was a fair during Armory Week that had each gallery bring a single artist to feature. LA’s Carmichael Gallery showcased the talents of street artist Mark Jenkins. The Family Room booth housed many great sculptures from Mark that had fair attendees constantly stopping with double takes when encountering his eye catching pieces. Check it out after the jump.

Armory Week ’11 – Christina Ray @ Pulse NY

One of the booths we really enjoyed at this year’s Pulse fair was that of Christina Ray, who presented a solo exhibition by artist Beka Goedde. Goedde’s work is very much based in printmaking, using such techniques as etching and Chine-collé (the application of thin colored paper as color) to create unique mixed media pieces that sometimes resemble simple collage and other times look more like complex abstract paintings. Christina Ray also presented a Pulse Project by Ben Wolf. Located near the entrance of the […]

Armory Week ’11: Scope

Armory Week’s merry go round of satellite fairs would not be complete without the inclusion of Scope. Held at a large warehouse facility on the west wide of the island, the location reflected the grass root and creative vibe that gave us numerous sound related installations and a really gaudy ode to decadence. Oh, did we mention that there was an artistic experiment that featured five fraternity boys stuck in a box for four hours with nothing but a window, a microphone, cases of beer, […]

Armory Week ’11 – Independent Fair

After enjoying the change and chaos of the inaugural Independent fair last year (covered), we made sure to return this year when making our Armory week rounds. And we were glad we did. Although the Independent can feel somewhat chaotic because of its lack of walls to designate individual booths, the art presented tends to be much edgier and less commercial than that shown at many of the other fairs. Even so, we were able to find a lot of work that we enjoyed, some […]

Video/Armory Week ’11 – David Ellis Wins Pulse New York 2011 Prize

Over the weekend, members of the Pulse Prize selection committee made the exciting announcement that this year’s Pulse Prize would be awarded to David Ellis. Ellis—represented by the Joshua Liner Gallery in the fair’s Impulse solo project section—exhibited a varied collection of sculpture, video and installation, including True Value (Paint Fukette), an animatronic assembly of paint buckets orchestrated to create a complex drum beat. Ellis will receive a $2,500 cash grant and the opportunity to design the bag provided to VIP guests at the 2012 […]

Armory Week ’11: First Look at Volta Art Fair

We continue our coverage of Armory Week ’11 with Volta NY . Volta sets itself apart from other art fairs by exhibiting galleries that have each elected to show only one artist. This selection of solo shows makes for a more consistent and intensive art viewing experience as compared with other fairs, which is always engaging and challenging. See first images from the Volta fair, after the jump.
