Openings: Lari Pittman – “New Paintings” @ Regen Projects

One of the finest galleries in Los Angeles, Regen Projects, recently opened a show of “New Paintings” by Lari Pittman. The vibrant, bright, vivid, and colorful paintings include a mixture of abstraction and figuration, each one intricate and expertly painted.  The works feature a dichotomy of “renewal/decay, secular/sacred, decorative/grotesque, hot/cold, sweet/toxic, taste/kitsch, mannered/unpredictable, transparency/opacity”.  Check out the show for yourself before it goes down Oct. 23. More after the jump…

Openings: “Misericordia” @ PRISM

As previewed by AM, Prism opened Misericordia last Friday night to a excited and fashionable Los Angeles crowd.  The show featured the excellent curatorial (the show was curated by Birte Kleemann, Director at The Pace Gallery) quality you expect from Prism and included pieces by some of the best artists working today, like Terence Koh, Sterling Ruby, and Chris Burden, alongside some works that were hundreds of years old.  The exploration of Mercy never looked so interesting. More opening images after the jump…

Openings: Jonathan LeVine Gallery – “Annual Summer Invitational”

Last week, we stopped by Jonathan LeVine Gallery to hang out and catch their “Annual Summer Invitational” (previewed). The diverse group show consisted of artists who have never officially shown with the gallery and gave attendees of the gallery a different look at some different Low Brow and Street art action. We particularly enjoyed the Judith Supine, Andrew Hem (interviewed),  and EVOL pieces that were displayed. Catch it all after the jump.

Openings: “Summer Group Show” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

On Saturday night, AM attended the opening for Joshua Liner Gallery’s annual “Summer Show”. Apparently, so did many of the art loving New Yorkers that turned out to pack the house. The show had diverse lineup of talented artists including Shawn Barber, Tiffany Bozic, Ryan Bradley, Tony Curanaj, Mike Davis, Jeremy Fish, Ian Francis, Evan Hecox, Tat Ito, Jessica Joslin, Mi Ju, David Kassan, Kris Kuksi, Mac, Tomokazu Matsuyama, Ryan McLennan, Dennis McNett, Cleon Peterson, Pema Rinzin, James Roper, Swoon, Oliver Vernon, Pete Watts and […]

Openings: Retna Installation @ Rivera & Rivera

For the final exhibition in Rivera & Rivera’s South Park location, internationally-acclaimed, Los Angeles-based graffiti star Retna unveiled a ground to ceiling installation featuring his signature text-styled skills. The black and white work combined spray paint and fabric and covered the floor and 25-ft. high walls from top to bottom. The immersive work is a complete visual experience and takes you deep inside the artist’s universe. In addition, there was a private room where screen prints and paintings were shown.  See more images after the […]

Openings: David LaChapelle – “American Jesus” @ Paul Kasmin

Last Tuesday night, Paul Kasmin Gallery hosted the opening for David La Chapelle’s latest body of work “American Jesus.” We’re not sure if it’s the gallery or David’s following, but the space was jam-packed with onlookers gawking at David’s elaborate digitally rendered photos. Fans dressed up as if it was Halloween, mingling away, waiting to catch some time with the star artist, and much like last month’s crazy Mark Ryden opening, the action spilled into the adjacent streets. The provocative phototography grabbed everyone attention as […]

Openings: Jonathan Yeo – “Porn in the USA” @ Lazarides (Bevery Hills)

The lights were dimmed, the walls were painted black, and the spotlights were perfectly positioned.  It was a appropriately romantic mood for some naughty pictures, courtesy of Jonathan Yeo and Lazarides, Beverly Hills. The 8,000 square foot temporary gallery hosted its 3rd show, one that was a totally unique experience from the previous two. While David Choe, JR, Conor Harrington and crew brought the urban streets inside, Yeo brought the high class brothel co-inhabited by world famous celebrities and nude beauties into the cavernous Beverly […]

Openings: Lisa Yuskavage @ Greengrassi Gallery

AM favorite Lisa Yuskavage is currently exhibiting at London’s Greengrassi Gallery. The New York based artist comes at us with another collection of dazzling works featuring her ever sultry figures of women in their natural state. What’s really cool is that she’s continuing to create smaller works to compliment the larger canvases which already run a pretty penny (hundreds of thousands), much like this gem we saw at David Zwirner from last year’s Art Basel Miami. Check out this breathtaking parade of paintings after the […]

Openings: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Familiar Strangers” @ Lebasse Projects

This past Saturday saw the opening of Yoskay Yamamoto’s (featured) exhibition “Familiar Strangers”. It is the third solo show by the artist at LeBasse Projects and features a diverse range of work, including paintings on panel and canvas, sculptures made of cast resin and metal, and hand carved wood sculptures. The well-attended opening included artist friends Audrey Kawasaki, Luke Chueh, Edwin Ushiro, Nate Frizzell, and Bumblebee. More after the jump…

Openings: Logan Hicks, Anthony Lister and Michael Kalish @ Opera Gallery (NY)

Last week, AM attended the opening at New York’s Opera Gallery where they hosted the opening for Logan Hicks (interviewed), Anthony Lister’s (interviewed) and Michael Kalish. Many attended the opening including Eric Haze, Charming Baker and crew. Check out the opening night pics after the jump.
