Previews: Tom Sachs – “American Handmade Paintings” @ Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac (Marais)

Opening as we speak, the Marais location of Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac is hosting the reception for Tom Sachs’ new show. The title of the new works, American Handmade Paintings, speaks to the NY-based sculptor’s use of American iconography as well as the way his pieces are meticulously constructed. Highlighted in this seventh solo with the Paris showspace are two techniques often seen in the versatile artist’s practice –  pyrography and marquetry – respectively, the use of fire as a drawing tool and the complex assemblages pre-painted inlaid elements. It […]

Showing: Stohead – “Now” @ Galerie Lefeuvre

German artist Stohead is currently having a solo show at Galerie Lefeuvre in Paris, showing for the second time in their space. Titled Now, the show features 14 colorful, large size canvases in which he mixes his signature tagging and calligraphy elements with abstract smoke elements. Slightly different than some of his previous paintings that are mostly focused on letters, this body of work feels like a step forward for the Berlin-based artist. While we’ve seen him use these other dynamic elements in some of […]

On Thursday, 30th of  January, Galerie Géraldine Zberro in Paris opened a two men show by French artists Julien “Seth” Malland and Pascal Vilcollet. Studio Visit: Katrin Fridriks

We stopped by Katrin Fridriks workshop/studio in Paris during holidays, and got a chance to see her recent works as they were getting packed for their trip to fairs worldwide. We also got to talk with her about her plans for 2014, and the way all the successful shows, fairs and auction results are affecting her work and life. Being one of the few female artist out there that reached the level she is at, we were interested to find out more about her and her […]

Studio Visit: Ludo

French artist Ludo (interviewed) welcomed us in his Paris workspace just before Christmas in the middle of working on his big solo show in NYC with Jonathan LeVine gallery. Only few days after his studio was also visited by the actor Christopher Lambert who showed big interest in his work, we talked with Ludo about his upcoming show, his career and his plans. Coming from a graphic design background, he always liked the idea of illegally placing his work in public, so he started creating street work […]

Showing: Sainer – “Neverland” @ Galerie Itinerrance

Sainer, member of the infamous Etam Cru, rounded out a succesful year with a solo show at Galerie Itinerrance in Paris. Known for supporting young artists coming from the graffiti/street art movement, the showspace and their patrons were a successful combination for the Polish artist’s French debut. Even though most of the works were large size canvases, Neverland entirely sold out only few days after the opening. Both Sainer and Bezt, who are the only members of Etam Cru, had big years creating large scale murals […]

Streets: JR @ National Library of France (Paris)

French “photograffeur” JR (interviewed) recently turned the facade of the National Library of France in Paris into his largest photo printer yet as he brought his Inside Out project back home again. Pasted in strips over the course of a week in November, the striking image and clever use of the building further cements himself as one of his country’s foremost street artists.
