Preview: Boogie – “The Uncovering” @ Carmichael Gallery

This Saturday, July 10, Carmichael Gallery in Culver City opens a show of photographs by international photographer and Brooklyn resident Boogie. The artist, who was born and raised in Belgrade, Serbia, started his photographic career by documenting rebellion and civil unrest during the civil war in his native land. He has taken that experience and applied it to provide honest portrayals of the streets and fringes of society, including gangsters, prostitutes, and junkies. “The Uncovering” involves the narrative space between endings and new beginnings and […]

Openings: Vhils & JR @ Lazarides (Beverly Hills)

Last night, AM stopped by the spacious Lazarides popup gallery in Beverly Hills to take in the four-person show of Vhils, JR, Conor Harrington (interviewed), and Micallef (interviewed). Dubbed “Eurotrash,” the impressive grouping had ample room to each bring a full body of work for all to enjoy. We’ll start our coverage off by focusing in on Vhils and JR, who also collaborated on some street pieces in the week leading up to the opening. Portugal-based artist Vhils reprised his popular chiseled walls by bringing them […]

Streets: Vhils & JR in Los Angeles (Part II)

As you know, AM has been looking forward to seeing four great artists (Vhils, JR, Conor Harrington (interviewed), Micallef (interviewed) get together for a show at the Lazarides space in Beverly Hills (320 North Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210). “Eurotrash” opens on Wednesday, but JR and Vhils have already completed some murals downtown LA (Spring Street between 6th and 7th) for their fans to enjoy. Of particular interest is the collaboration piece between the two artists where Vhils goes over a photographic wheatpaste piece […]

LACMA Acquires Gursky Ocean Photographs

According to the New York Times, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has acquired four Andreas Gursky photographs from the artist’s Gagosian Gallery exhibition, which we covered here.  It is unknown how much it paid, but the photographs, based on existing satellite imagery, carried the asking price of $680,000 apiece. LACMA received the funds from an anonymous source and from Steven F. Roth, executive vice president of the World Oil Corporation. The timely acquisition is of particular relevance and urgency given the current oil […]

According to Lazarides, Vhils and JR have both taken time out from their busy schedule (Vhils – Fame Fest, JR – Cannes Festival & Germany) to travel to Los Angeles to prepare for their upcoming show. In fact, they are already on the streets around town working on some of the big-scale pieces they are famous for. The exhibition, entitled “Eurotrash”, will also feature two more great artists from the UK gallery’s stable of artists and – Conor Harrington (interviewed) and Micallef (interviewed). This will […]

Openings: “Small Victories” Booooooom Photography Show @ Above Second Gallery

Last Thursday, May 20th, the Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong hosted a photography exhibition put together from reader submissions by art website – Booooooom. Hopefully, some of our readers who have some photo skills were able to get in on the action. “Small Victories” is a photographic celebration of the quietly beautiful, unintentionally funny, people and things all around us – little moments that make life worth living. The work in the show consists entirely of 4×6 photographs, submitted by people all over the […]

“Heroes & Villians” Book

Ever wonder how your favorite artist looks in person (like the beautiful Liz McGrath seen above)? Well, unless you live LA, Miami, SF, NY, or London, then chances are slim that you will get to meet them at an art show or event. While most people focus on the art, “Heroes & Villians” photographers Roman Cho and Tatiana Wills decided to center their attention on the actual artists themselves. And now that they have signed a deal with ZERO+ Publishing, hopefully you will get a […]

Video: JR – “Women Are Heroes” Movie

As we mentioned in a previous post, French photographer JR’s film “Women Are Heroes” has been selected for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival. Bringing his project full circle, the movie documents his travels around the world photographing victimized and impoverished women and then pasting them up in their own neighborhoods and towns, sending a powerful message of hope and strength. Take a look at a special print made available for this occasion as well as other planned screening dates after the jump…
