Openings: “Pretty on the Inside” @ Paul Kasmin

Last week, AM attended the group exhibition curated by KAWS and Erik Parker, a unique project hosted by Paul Kasmin Gallery. The show Pretty on the Inside (teased) included works from seven American artists – Todd James, Tony Matelli, Joyce Pensato, Peter Saul, Karl Wirsum and of course, the two curators. The visually intense and almost organic feel of works served to focus the viewer on the raw beauty within. The show runs until August 19th, so make it a point to stop by if you’re […]

Teaser: “Pretty on the Inside” @ Paul Kasmin

Later this month, the Paul Kasmin Gallery will host the opening of Pretty on the Inside, a show curated by KAWS and Erik Parker. To our knowledge, this is the first time KAWS has flexed his curatorial chops since I Can’t Feel My Face exhibition in Los Angeles in 2009 (covered). Along with the two curators, the other artists they chose to join them are Todd James, Tony Matelli, Joyce Pensato, Peter Saul, and Karl Wirsum. See  you there on June 23rd. Discuss KAWS here.

Focus: Street Market – Barry McGee, Steve Powers, Todd James – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

As part of the MoCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition (covered), Todd James (aka REAS), Barry McGee (aka Ray Fong, Lydia Fong, Robert Pimple, Twist) and Steve Powers (aka ESPO) reunited to re-envision their legendary 2000 Street Market installation at Deitch Projects, which itself was a recreation of the trio’s Indelible Market at the Philadelphia ICA earlier that year. Although the installation is always different, the idea remains the same: an urban environment—complete with stores, streets and all—that reflects the artists’ idea of a hyper-real […]

Openings: “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA (First Look)

This morning, the Los Angeles MOCA lifted the veil of secrecy on its highly anticipated “Art in the Streets” exhibition.  This first major U.S. museum survey of graffiti and street art is the brainchild of Jeffrey Deitch (along with associate co-curators Roger Gastman & Aaron Rose) and was certainly one of the first enticing possibilities that came to AM’s mind when we first heard of his unconventional hiring as MOCA’s director early last year. Despite the inevitable quibbling about who was and who wasn’t included […]

Openings: Todd “REAS” James – “Great Adventure” @ Galeria Javier López

Just hours ago, Todd “REAS” James’ show at Galeria Javier López opened it’s doors to the “Great Adventure”. It turns out, the adventure was a tongue-in-cheek way of referring to wars and the associated atrocities that come with it. Much like his show earlier this year in NY at Gering & López (covered), James’ cartoonish portrayal of the machinations of war include smiling tanks shooting out blood, funny-faced missiles romping around, nude female soldiers frolicking around in the mayhem, and much more. Seeing the chaos […]

Openings: “Brush Strokes” @ V1 Gallery

Last week, Copenhagen’s V1 gallery opened the stunning new show “Brush Strokes,” featuring the works of Todd James (aka REAS) and Lydia Fong (aka Barry McGee). According to the V1 site, the title of the exhibition is a reference to the humorous NYC public-access TV show. McGee filled the gallery with several large scale installations — a text-heavy cluster of new style panels, another of only geometrics and another framed photos and paper pieces — as well as several smaller works, while James contributed a […]

Todd James Installation @ Bar Miami (O.H.W.O.W)

After Todd “REAS” James opened his show in Paris last year and New York early this year, he turned his attention to Miami where he went to town on OHWOW’s Bar location.  As one of the group artists who will be doing new installs approximately every 2 months, REAS certainly left his mark last month by painting all his classic imagery on all the available wall space. More images after the jump…

Openings: Todd James – “Make My Burden Lighter” @ Gering & López

AM, along with almost everyone else in NYC, came out for the opening of Todd James’ “Make My Burden Lighter” at Midtown gallery Gering & López. Although “Burden” is James’ first solo show with the gallery, he of course has been a longtime fixture of the urban art scene under his street name REAS, co-creating Deitch’s seminal 2000 “Street Market” exhibition along with Barry McGee and Steve Powers. In this current show, James has created a new series of canvases and works on paper that […]

Openings: Todd James (REAS) – “Don’t stop get it get it” @ Colette

Veteran of the New York graffiti scene, Todd James (a.k.a. REAS), opened his first solo show in France yesterday at Colette, boutique of all that is cool in Paris. His show, “Don’t stop get it get it,” consists of some recent studies and paintings that take an irreverent look at the machinations of war. This looks to be a show that can’t be missed if you are lucky enough to be in the City of Lights. More images after the jump.

Outsiders @ The New Art Gallery Walsall

We recently showed you the stunning mural done by Conor Harrington for the “Outsiders” show at The New Art Gallery Walsall. Well, here are some more photos of the other artwork for you to peruse. The show features Blu, David Choe, Miranda Donovan, Faile, Conor Harrington, Todd James a.k.a REAS (seen above), Paul Insect, Invader, Lucy McLauchlan, Antony Micallef, Polly Morgan, JR, Vhils, Jonathan Yeo, and Zevs and appears to have some different pieces when compared to the “Outsiders” show in New York. Photos after […]
