It’s that time of year again, when the Whitney makes an important announcement regarding the Whitney Biennial.  Last year at the exact same time, it announced the curatorial team for its 2010 Biennial.  Today, the much-anticipated list of artists, which includes Robert Williams, Aurel Schmidt, and Tauba Auerbach, was announced.  Curators Francesco Bonami and Gary Carrion-Murayari chose a diverse range of artists who work across all different kinds of media and subject matter.  Eleven artists make their return from previous Biennials.  In what could further […]

Openings: Robert Williams – “In the Service of the Hypothetical” @ Tony Shafrazi Gallery

On Halloween night, Tony Shafrazi Gallery hosted the solo exhibition (previewed) of Low Brow icon Robert Williams. AM attended the long awaited return of the legendary figure — it was everything we hoped for and more! Many of the notables who made it out for last night’s Stages exhibition (here) were in attendance, along with some of art’s household names, who also came out to pay homage to one of the founding fathers of the movement. Ever friendly and gracious, Robert took time to greet […]

Robert Williams Lecture @ Oakland Museum of California

If you ever wanted to learn about how the “Low Brow” art movement started, this series of videos posted by sketchv might interest you.  Broken into 11 parts (Part 1 seen above), these videos recorded the lecture of Robert Williams at the Oakland Museum of California a couple months ago that was part of the L.A. Paint show (currently showing still).  Although not the best quality, Williams can be heard covering a wide variety of topics as well as talk about over 60 of his […]

Basel musing: Robert Williams’ Appetite For Destruction

This has been written on before, but AM thought that it was important enough to revisit. In the world of low-brow and pop surrealist art, there perhaps is no bigger name than Robert Williams, and Williams’ 1978 painting Appetite For Destruction is without a doubt his most recognizable work. People worldwide were exposed to Williams’ work when the paintings’ title and image were used by Guns ‘N Roses for their incredibly successful 1987 major-label debut (although the cover art was soon changed as many found […]
