Openings: Ryan Hewett – ‘Order’ @ Unit London

South African artist Ryan Hewett (interviewed) has returned to London for a new solo show at The Unit London entitled Order featuring a new series of expressive and semi-abstract portraits. Depicted figures include himself as well as Egon Schiele, Marcel Duchamp, Lucien Freud, Samuel Beckett, and Audrey Hepburn. Unlike his 2015 solo show Untitled in which he created deliberately chaotic and semi-abstract portraits of famous figures, the new body of work is more planned and focused with abstract strokes and a textured pasto technique. Previews: Ryan Hewett – “Order” @ Unit London

Following the successful preview show earlier this year (covered), Ryan Hewett (interviewed) is back with The Unit London for his solo. Opening on the 29th of September, the exhibition will introduce a new direction that the South African artist has taken with his work and approach. Slightly stepping away from spontaneous construction and deconstruction and a deliberately chaotic working process, the new works are cleaner, more restricted and thought through. Solid color backgrounds, carefully chosen tones of paint, smooth gradients, perfect circles and use of masking tape for […]

Upcoming: Ryan Hewett @ Unit London

Only couple of weeks ahead of his long awaited London solo show, Ryan Hewett (featured) and The Unit London shared with us some images of his newest works. Staying true to his abstract portraiture, the South African painter seems to have developed more distinctive and striking visual language since his last solo show with the gallery in April of 2015. Opening towards the end of September, Hewett’s solo show will include a new series of portrait oils created especially for this exhibition. After a great success of the […]

The South African artist will be presenting 14 new paintings on canvas as an insight into his new body of work. The exhibition is sort of a preview of his forthcoming solo that will be held in London during Frieze Week in October. Following his successful London show from 2015, the new showing will continue his work on abstract portraits and “the exploration of the human psyche and deconstruction of his subject […]

Rewind: Nov 23 – Dec 22

For out latest Rewind feature we are highlighting a video from INSA featuring his work with Pepsi in creating a moving peace sign (formed of painted cars) that can be seen from space. This particular form of art is right down the UK-based street artist’s alley as he has plenty of experience as the inventor of the Gif-iti series of works. Other notable videos include: Jeff Gillette working in the desert. Timelapse of Odeith at work. Daniel Arsham’s Future Relic 04. An online video installation […]

Rewind: Mar 19 – Jun 7

It’s time for another Rewind feature where we share some art related videos that might have slipped past you the last few months. First up is a video from Birdman documenting Miss Van and her friends Dan Quintana, Victor Castillo, and Esao Andrews paintings the facade of an an old cinema costume shop usually closed to the public on Fairfax Boulevard in Los Angeles. Particularly interesting is the quality of murals (photos here) that were created seeing as Miss Van is the only one who […]
