Preview: “Space//Form” Group Exhibition @ Breeze Block Gallery

As the opening of the Space//Form group exhibition draws ever nearer, and following on from our studio view, AM brings you a glimpse of some of the work in this huge show. Over 100 artists are participating in the exhibit, which opens on 6th September at Breeze Block Gallery in Portland. The artists were each given the same brief and the same materials to work with and asked to explore and represent their interpretation of space and form within either the natural or built environment. Each piece of […]

Update: Space//Form Group Exhibition @ Breeze Block Gallery

One of the most interesting things about curating a group exhibition of over 100 artists is getting to see behind the scenes as the artists develop their work for the show (Chloe Early seen above). Updates come constantly as the participants share their excitement about creating work for the show, and getting to see  some of the creative process that goes into the work is always a pleasure. Space//Form opens in just a couple of weeks time now in Portland at Breeze Block Gallery and here […]

Upcoming: “Space//Form” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Following our recently curated group exhibitions in Hong Kong; East West Connect and Los Angeles; City of Fire, AM’s UK correspondent Sven Davis has branched out with his own curatorial endeavour Space//Form. The group exhibition brings together over 100 young contemporary artists, and opens 6th September at Portland’s Breeze Block Gallery. Curator, Sven Davis, has worked in architecture for over 20 years, so the thematic center of the exhibition is close to his heart as Space//Form centers around notions of the architectural landscape. Each of the […]

Teaser: “The Vertical Gallery” @ The Standard (DTLA)

This Thursday, May 31st, The Standard Hotel in Downtown LA will be unveiling The Vertical Gallery, a reference to their stairwell which has acted as canvas for a number of select artists. Along with AIKO (seen above), others who have painted the walls include Deedee Cheriel, Anthony Lister, Juan Mendez, Eric Garcia, Skypage, Sage Vaughn, Luis Farfan, Curtis Kulig, and Skullphone. If you remember, the DTLA location of the hip chain has also hosted outdoor murals from artists like Mike Stilkey, Buff Monster, Dave Kinsey, […]

Openings: Sage Vaughn – “Last Year” @ Known Gallery

Over the weekend, the Known Gallery exhibited the work of artist Sage Vaughn (featured) in an exhibit titled Last Year. The first solo showing for the UK-based artist at the gallery featured a collection of large woven editions based on his paintings and on his collages from his Envelope Series. While working with a different type of material, Vaughn still managed to infuse his ironic take on popular culture. Whether it was images referencing the late 70s to early 80s or his use of animals […]

Openings: “Reality Bites” @ Post No Bills

Last week, Post No Bills held their third exhibition thus far entitled Reality Bites. The show centered around the work of various artists including Borf, Brett Amory, Sage Vaughn, Kelsey Brookes, Mark Jenkins, Morley, and Ravi Zupa who supplied new limited edition prints as well as hand finished multiples. Among some of the night’s highlights, Shark (seen previously here) by Brookes was one which clearly got the attention of the visitors. Featuring the use of neon-colored lines and an array of colors, the piece was […]

Showing / Viewpoints: Sage Vaughn – ‘Children of a Lesser God’ @ Lazarides Gallery

The first UK solo show by LA-based Sage Vaughn (referred to in early May) opened a few weeks back at Lazarides Gallery in London with a title ostensibly borrowed from the 1980 play by Mark Medoff or its subsequent film adaptation. While Children of a Lesser God presents no radical thematic or stylistic departures for Vaughn, the exhibition is a strong one — especially the part in the gallery’s main space on the ground floor, where canvases from the artist’s Wildlife series have been hung […]

Studio Visit: Sage Vaughn

Children of a Lesser God, the first UK solo show by Los Angeles-based artist Sage Vaughn opens today at Lazarides Gallery in London. AM visited the artist’s studio last year as he prepared for both this exhibition and the release of hand-painted multiples — the latter screenprinted by Modern Multiples and painted with watercolours. Vaughn’s sunlit space seemed like the ideal environment for working. There was also an additional and immediate source of inspiration right outside his studio: a bird-feeding area that apparently attracts sparrows, […]

Opening on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 8pm at Known Gallery on Fairfax in Los Angeles is a show of new photographic works from Keegan Gibbs, along with installations by Sage Vaughn and Brendan Lynch.  There is little information available at the moment, but from the preview images, it looks as though the exhibition will have a beach, ocean, and surf theme.  See the entire show for yourself at Known Gallery – 441 North Fairfax Ave in Los Angeles – before the show closes on Feb […]
