Previews: 1010 – “Eversion” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Following up on last year’s exhibition (covered) at Hashimoto Contemporary will be another solo from 1010 at the San Francisco gallery starting November 3rd. Eversion continues the Hamburg-based artist’s series of portals, echoing the large-scale works he paints on the streets. The pieces utilizing color theory and perspective are painted on layers of acrylic glass and mounted on aluminum dibond, a technique that augments the illusory effect. Discuss 1010 here.

Openings: Seonna Hong – “In Our Nature” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Last weekend, Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco held the opening reception for a solo exhibition from Seonna Hong (interviewed). Entitled In Our Nature, the new body of work from the Los Angeles-based artist continued her landscape works featuring her human and animal companions surrounding by minimalistic environments created from abstract and loose elements. Previews: Barry McGee // Sites Unseen @ Moscone Center Garage

Today, the 9th of October, public art by Barry McGee will be unveiled (3PM–6PM) at the Moscone Center Garage in downtown San Francisco’s Yerba Buena neighborhood. This will be an inaugural event for Sites Unseen, a nonprofit public art organization that joined with Ratio 3 gallery for this project. The installations by the world famous SF-based artist will feature multi-colored geo panels installed in several locations on the exterior of the Moscone Center Garage, along with hand painted signature characters. Previews: Seonna Hong – “In Our Nature” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

In about a week, Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco will be presenting a new solo from Seonna Hong (interviewed). Entitled In Our Nature, the new body of work from the Los Angeles-based artist will continue to expand on her expressionistic landscapes, acrylic works on canvas as well as small vignettes on paint chips. The scenes usually involve her human and animal subjects interacting with environments created from abstract and loose elements. The exhibition will be on view from October 8 to the 29th. Last Thursday, Spoke Art in San Francisco held the opening reception for the latest edition of  Suggestivism exhibitions curated by Nathan Spoor. Openings: Karla Ortiz – “Chimerical” @ Spoke Art

Last week, Spoke Art in San Francisco proudly presented a debut solo show from Karla Ortiz (seen below) entitled Chimerical. The display of new illustrations and paintings from the locally-based artist featured a selection haunting works drawing from her experience as a concept artist in the gaming and film industries. Inspired by the Brothers Grimm and other mythological stories, Ortiz’s storytelling talents are evident as viewers are drawn into the narrative as they stand gazing at her pieces. Upcoming: Sam Friedman – “Sitting Pretty” @ Chandran Gallery

Sam Friedman will be opening a new exhibition soon at Chandran Gallery in San Francisco. For his debut West Coast solo show, the New York-based artist has prepared 16 new intuitive abstract works, many of which are large scale. Sitting Pretty will be on view September 2 – October 14 with an opening reception on September 2 from 7 – 9pm with the artist in attendance. Previews: Casey Gray – “Paper Trail” @ Legion

On July 8th, Casey Gray will be opening a small show of works on paper at Legion in San Francisco. The new experimental pieces from the locally-based artist are created with acrylic spray paint and precision masking techniques, a continuation of his explorations of still life. Paper Trail will include four medium-scale bulletin board paintings referencing his studio environment as well as some smaller fruit, vegetable, and landscape studies. Discuss this show here.
