Last Thursday, Spoke Art in San Francisco held the opening reception for the latest edition of  Suggestivism exhibitions curated by Nathan Spoor. Like previous group shows in Orange County (2011) and Rome (2013) and Los Angeles (2014), Spoor put together a stellar list of artists. This Thursday, the first of September, Spoke Art in San Francisco will be hosting the newest iteration of the Suggestivism exhibitions curated by Nathan Spoor. Openings: Karla Ortiz – “Chimerical” @ Spoke Art

Last week, Spoke Art in San Francisco proudly presented a debut solo show from Karla Ortiz (seen below) entitled Chimerical. The display of new illustrations and paintings from the locally-based artist featured a selection haunting works drawing from her experience as a concept artist in the gaming and film industries. Inspired by the Brothers Grimm and other mythological stories, Ortiz’s storytelling talents are evident as viewers are drawn into the narrative as they stand gazing at her pieces. Upcoming: Sam Friedman – “Sitting Pretty” @ Chandran Gallery

Sam Friedman will be opening a new exhibition soon at Chandran Gallery in San Francisco. For his debut West Coast solo show, the New York-based artist has prepared 16 new intuitive abstract works, many of which are large scale. Sitting Pretty will be on view September 2 – October 14 with an opening reception on September 2 from 7 – 9pm with the artist in attendance. Previews: Casey Gray – “Paper Trail” @ Legion

On July 8th, Casey Gray will be opening a small show of works on paper at Legion in San Francisco. The new experimental pieces from the locally-based artist are created with acrylic spray paint and precision masking techniques, a continuation of his explorations of still life. Paper Trail will include four medium-scale bulletin board paintings referencing his studio environment as well as some smaller fruit, vegetable, and landscape studies. Discuss this show here. Showing: RETNA // “The Future of the Past: Mummies and Medicine” @ Legion of Honor

Currently at the Legion of Honor, The Future of the Past: Mummies and Medicine is showing through August 2018 featuring RETNA’s (featured) distinct script in the background. The Los Angeles-based graffiti artist’s work has always been compared to and influenced in part by Egyptian hieroglyphs, so his career has come a full circle now with an invitation by the museum in San Francisco to paint the walls surrounding the exhibition. Openings: Joel Daniel Phillips – “Belongings” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Earlier this month, a show featuring new charcoal and graphite drawings on paper by Joel Daniel Phillips opened up at San Francisco’s Hashimoto Contemporary. Belongings comprises  of mainly four large-scale portraits interesting paired with solitary objects (on similarly shaped paper) that serves as an extension of their characters. The locally-based based artist references the “ever-expanding class distinctions of the Mid-Market area” with his work. Previews: 123KLAN – “Style Is The Message” @ 1AM Gallery

Tomorrow night (April 21st) in San Francisco, the First Amendment Gallery (1AM SF) will be hosting a new solo show from 123KLAN (interviewed). Originally from France, this husband and wife duo are relocated to Montreal a while back where they have now prepared a new body of work entitled Style Is The Message for this exhibition. The fresh paintings are inspired by their experiences in the Bay Area and feature their signature fusion of graphic design and graffiti styles. Discuss 123KLAN here.
