Anthony Michael Sneed recently opened his solo exhibition Grand Illusion at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery. The New York based artist has been previously known for his humorous works of retro 8-bit video game iconography, but this body of work is an elevation into a new level of abstraction and color theory. Utilizing simple palettes with detailed premeditated placement, Anthony created works that renders fantastic optical illusions in both 2-D and 3-D. After moving away from San Francisco to Los Angeles two years ago to concentrate on painting and opening Memoir Tattoo with his girlfriend, Shawn Barber (interviewed) decided to revisit his previous home city with a new exhibition, Youth of Today at Fecal Face Dot Gallery. Thursday evening, 111 Minna in San Francisco hosted the opening for Nathan Ota and Risk’s collaborative exhibition, That Was Then, This Is Now. The two respected graffiti artists first collaborated over 25 years in high school, but had lost contact ever since. It was not until last year, when Greg Simkins and Jeff Soto worked on murals with Risk (and knew about the two’s previous history), that it was suggested that they reconnect again. On July 8th, the Bay Area will welcome master tattooist and fine artist Shawn Barber’s (featured) and his new collection of paintings. For those familiar with his work, they will know of a certain group of paintings he calls the the Doll Series – from which it looks like some of these preview images would fit in. A couple weeks ago, White Walls in San Francisco hosted a dual show from native son Adam Caldwell and UK artist Jonathan Darby. Entitled Intersection, the premise of the show was a meeting of cultures – American by Caldwell and Brazilian by Darby with his favela installation. This Thursday, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art will host an exclusive signing event for the art book “Further,” featuring the work of Damon Soule, David Choong Lee, MARS-1, Nome Edonna, Oliver Vernon, Robert Hardgrave and Tomokazu Matsuyama. AM recently attended the opening for Kris Kuksi and Christy Langer’s “Meticulous Engagements” (previewed) at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco. Langer, who first caught our eye at Basel last year and is pictured above, brought a nice mix of large and small resin sculptures, examining the violence and fragility of nature. Openings: Mike Giant @ Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea – Milan

Following his successful show last year at France’s Magda Danysz (covered), Mike Giant returned to the EU to open his “Welcome to Frisco” show last Thursday night at Milan’s Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea. Featuring his trademark clean lines and tattooed subjects, Giant’s showing looks to be a great introduction to the San Francisco aesthetic and culture for the Milanese people.
