Studio Visits: Kevin Cyr

We recently stopped by Kevin Cyr’s Brooklyn studio to check out his latest body of work slated for his two-person show with Jessica Hess entitled “Temporal Spaces,” which was curated by Lainya Magana and opens at San Francisco’s White Walls March 6. Stepping into the space, we were amazed to see how productive Cyr has been since his last show at NYC’s Raandesk Gallery in January (covered). Covering floor to ceiling of one of his studio’s huge walls was a mosiac of detailed paintings – […]

Studio Visits: David Choe

AM swung by David Choe’s satellite studio for a visit as the artist was preparing for his upcoming show at  FIFTY24SF.  Choe, who lives and works in New York City, has deep roots with both Los Angeles and the Bay Area and has maintained a makeshift studio a half hour south of San Francisco for the past two years.  Part recording studio, part screen print press, this live/work space provides the ideal creative getaway for the ever traveling artist.  David opened his doors for a […]

Installation: Barry McGee @ SFMoMA – A Closer Look

After visiting Mike Shine’s outdoor carnival for SFMoMA‘s 75th Anniversary, AM ducked inside to catch one last look at Barry McGee’s massive clustered installation (previewed).  Consisting of hundreds of drawings, personal pictures and patented patterns, McGee’s exhibit truly conveyed the multi-faceted breadth of his works.  Arranged in a seemingly haphazard, though obviously well thought out manner, Twist’s install was literally bulging at the seams, seemingly so that one would assume it was on the cusp of giving birth or expelling a whole new body of […]

Openings: Travis Louie – “Lifetime Companions” @ Shooting Gallery

Travis Louie (interviewed) opened his latest solo show, “Lifetime Companions” at the Shooting Gallery this past weekend. Consisting of nine new acrylic paintings, “Lifetime Companions” explores the relationships and origins of a cavalcade of Louie’s characters seen mostly through the eye of a wedding portraitist. With a narrative that delves deeper than any fans imagination could possibly muster, Travis closes out 2010 with an amazing show and one not to miss.  In addition, Louie surprised his San Francisco fans with eight preliminary sketches, including a […]

Openings: KMNDZ, C3, Akira @ Shooting Gallery

With the tireless and industrious energy of one of his own robot subjects, Johnny “KMNDZ” Rodriguez opened a new show, alongside C3 and Akira, last weekend at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery.  Featuring a freshly painted mural and whole new body of work, this striking show depicts a foreboding future as viewed through the antiquated and dusty lens of a camera obscura.   While KMNDZ’s robots search for their humanity, you might find your own at the Shooting Gallery, show runs till November 13th. Openings: Date Farmers – “Strange Fruit” @ Fifty24SF

Growing up outside Los Angeles, we would find ourselves, once every couple years or so, visiting historic downtown.  Whether checking out the Bradbury building, Union Station or Chinatown, we always made sure to take a stroll down the birthplace of the City of Angels, Olvera Street.  Centered around a traditional Mexican style plaza, Olvera Street is a historic hub and insight to Mexicano culture.  Featuring colorful dresses, bollero musicians, Oaxacan altars, churro carts, Sacred Hearts and bootleg Mickey Mouse shirts, the energy and spirit of […]
