Art Focus: Trevor Wheatley

Our latest Art Focus feature introduces you to the singular work of Trevor Wheatley and his mix of sculptural skills, public art, and typography. Photos of the Toronto-based artist’s signage in the great outdoors can initially deceive you into thinking there is some photoshopping involved, but the slang terms and cultural references used are sculptural creations that show his mastery over a creative mix of materials. He explains his work as such – “Initially, I wanted to impose graphic one-liners on untouched environments. I started with the […]

Damien Hirst x Connaught Hotel Christmas Tree

For this holiday season, the Connaught Hotel in London commissioned Damien Hirst to create a Christmas tree outside for passerby’s in the posh Mayfair neighborhood to enjoy. The 30 foot Norway Spruce was decorated by the British artist with the power of science and medicine in mind, one of the themes that frequently inspires him. Garnishments include medical instruments, snowmen formed with pills, garlands of pink sausages, as well as traditional white doves. Hirst further explains – “The Christmas tree is a celebration of togetherness, a […]

Streets: Isaac Cordal (New York)

Last month, Isaac Cordal was invited to participate in the Residency at Vyt (Art Students League of New York) for a month. While there, the Spanish artist continued his series of Cement Eclipses works by creating more sculptures for placement on the streets. Scattered around New York City, the urban interventions are metaphors that reflect on politics, bureaucracy, and power – something to think about during the holidays. Discuss Isaac Cordal here.

Releases: Candice Tripp – “Sally” Masks

Earlier this year, you may have noticed some of the delicate mask sculptures Candice Tripp (interviewed) created for her show in Newcastle. These facial disguises are a reoccurring motif in her imagery and her characters can be seen cavorting around with them on in her dark narratives. Luckily for fans of the UK-based artist who took a liking to these, she has started a timed release for six versions of these masks that can be ordered here until noon on January 21st (GMT). Each piece will be […]

Kicking off the art year for 2016 is the highly anticipated return of Tauba Auerbach to the gallery scene after a hiatus of four years. Projective Instrument opens at Paula Cooper in New York on January 9th and will feature “glass sculptures, 3D printed sculptures, new paintings, weavings, a library and a small series of concerts by […]

Streets: Lukasz Berger aka Cekas (Lodz, Poland)

Lukasz Berger aka CekasOne was recently invited by Lodz Murals to add his contribution to their impressive collection of public installations and murals around the city. After following after works by such world renowned artists such as Os Gemeos, Aryz, Dal East, Alexis Diaz, Borondo and many more, the Polish artist took a fresh, completely different approach to creating his piece. Instead of choosing from a selection of available walls, Berger had a firm concept and the form of the wall he was looking for. The […]

Basel Week Miami ’15: Art Basel (Part 2)

Contrary to popular belief, Basel Week Miami isn’t just about walking around buying art from your favorite gallery or dealer. It is also a time for the general public to find inspiration from the vast assortment of quality art being displayed. Every year, the main Art Basel Miami Beach fair does a great job of serving as a “pop-up” museum for the week as over 70,000 people walk through the fair to catch legends of the past and legends in the making for the art world. It doesn’t matter […]

Basel Week Miami ’15: Art Basel (Part 1)

During the start of Basel Week Miami, we gave you an early first look during the VIP session of the Art Basel Miami Beach fair. The first day (as in years past) was the proverbial “running of the bulls” for many of the world’s elite collectors as they stormed the ginormous floor of the Miami convention center in search of artwork to add to their collections. Blue-chip galleries displayed 2015’s treasures by artists such as Andy Warhol, Kaws, Alex Israel, Tal R, Alex Katz, Josh Smith, Yoshitomo Nara, Ai […]
