On the 11th of December, the National Gallery Victoria in Melbourne opened a major international exhibition featuring two of the most significant artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries – Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei. Damien Hirst x Connaught Hotel Christmas Tree

For this holiday season, the Connaught Hotel in London commissioned Damien Hirst to create a Christmas tree outside for passerby’s in the posh Mayfair neighborhood to enjoy. The 30 foot Norway Spruce was decorated by the British artist with the power of science and medicine in mind, one of the themes that frequently inspires him. Garnishments include medical instruments, snowmen formed with pills, garlands of pink sausages, as well as traditional white doves. Streets: Isaac Cordal (New York)

Last month, Isaac Cordal was invited to participate in the Residency at Vyt (Art Students League of New York) for a month. While there, the Spanish artist continued his series of Cement Eclipses works by creating more sculptures for placement on the streets. Scattered around New York City, the urban interventions are metaphors that reflect on politics, bureaucracy, and power – something to think about during the holidays. Discuss Isaac Cordal here.

Earlier this year, you may have noticed some of the delicate mask sculptures Candice Tripp (interviewed) created for her show in Newcastle. These facial disguises are a reoccurring motif in her imagery and her characters can be seen cavorting around with them on in her dark narratives. Openings: Ron English – “NeoNature” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Over the weekend, Corey Helford Gallery christened their new space in Downtown LA with a solo from Ron English (featured) that has been two years in the making. Entitled NeoNature, the new body of work features an imaginative menagerie of strange creatures and different evolutionary paths mixed in with some pop culture references.
