Coming up this weekend on May 18th, the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin will be opening a new show from Anish Kapoor, one the most influential sculptors of his generation. The exhibition, his first major one in the city, will feature about 70 works spanning his diverse range of mediums including stone, steel, glass, wax, PVC skins, and high-tech material. After 18 months in the making, Gallery Workshop in Venice, Italy, is opening a very special show on the May 30th, showing new works by Diana Al-Hadid, and some classic pieces from Medardo Rosso, in collaboration with the Museo Medardo Rosso and Marianne Boesky Gallery. Currently showing at the Stranger Factory in Albuquerque is a dual exhibition from Chet Zar (interviewed) and Doktor A entitled Oddfellows. Aptly named for the strange artistic vision, the joint show from the two features Zar’s grotesque and monstrous portraits painted in a nightmarish fashion that only he can do as well as the Dok’s steampunk mechanical creations put together by his deft hand. Upcoming: Jeff Koons – “New Paintings And Sculpture” @ Gagosian (New York)

On May 9th, the Gagosian Gallery in New York (555 West 24th Street) will be presenting paintings and sculptures from contemporary art giant Jeff Koons. The works selected for this show come from several of his series of works including the Antiquity paintings and sculptures (Balloon Venus seen above), as well as pieces from his Hulk Elvis and Celebration line of works. It was a night to remember. Last week, the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles opened its doors to an extensive survey of Gary Baseman’s career and life entitled The Door Is Always Open. Friends, family, fellow artists, collectors, admirers, and well wishers alike attended to show their respects to the pervasive artist and his illustrious accomplishments. Releases: Yoskay Yamamoto – “my little universe” Sets

Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed), whom we last hung out with in Hawaii as he painted a mural for POW WOW, recently released a sets of matching sculptures and paintings. Each is entitled a numbered my little universe with the the paintings measuring 6″ x 6″ and the sculptures each two inches in diameter. Last week, MOHS Exhibit in Copenhagen presented all new work from Dennis McNett (featured) collectively entitled Wolfbats Are Real. Including wood block pieces in the standard format, the Brooklyn-based also created installations in the style of his previous shows – all paying tribute to mythical creatures that make up part of his imagery. Openings: Skewville – “Amusement” @ White Walls

A couple weeks ago, White Walls in San Francisco opened a new show from the Brooklyn-based twin brother duo, Skewville (featured). Amusement features about 30 different pieces painted on a mix of wood canvases and found materials as well as sculptural works – all created in their trademark “urban playground” style. Openings: Keith Haring Retrospective – “The Political Line” @ MAM Paris

Last weekend, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (MAM) opened a new retrospective of the late Keith Haring’s work entitled The Political Line. On display were a staggering number of pieces, over 250 paintings and sculptural works with a focus on the importance of Haring’s art as visual activism, highlighting the diversity of his socio-political views. The exhibition will be on view through August 18th in Paris and is made possible with the support of Citizens of Humanity. Discuss Keith Haring here.
