Over the weekend, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery hosted all new work from Aakash Nihalani alongside the solo from Haroshi (covered). Nihalani’s innovative geometric forms, collectively entitled Portal, featured a playful nature throughout the compositions, yet at the same time exhibited a strong sense of structure. Do not adjust your browser – nothing is wrong with the settings. It’s visual distortion at its finest and this is what Robert Lazzarini intends. Openings: Haroshi – “Virtual Reality” @ Jonathan LeVine

This past weekend, Japanese artist Haroshi debuted a new body of works at New York’s Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Entitled Virtual Reality, this exhibition is the second in the Big Apple by the sculptor known for utilizing used skate decks as his source material. On display this time were full-scale sculptural creations such as kicks by Airwalk, bullets, a skull, and even an incredible life size skater pulling off a handplant. Next Saturday night (January 19th), the third and final chapter of the Conjoined series of group exhibitions (see 2011 & 2012) will open its doors at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica. Maurizio Cattelan – “AMEN” @ Centre for Contemporary Art (Warsaw)

The always provocative contemporary artist Maurizio Cattelan is once again stirring up controversy, this time in relation to his current showing at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw. In addition to sculptural works for the museum, he has also placed a statue of Adolf Hitler praying on his knees in a former Jewish Ghetto where many Jews were killed or sent to their deaths by Hitler’s regime during the holocaust. Basel Week Miami ’12: Paul Kasmin Gallery @ Art Basel

Another booth we enjoyed at the main fair this year during Basel Week Miami was the work on display from Paul Kasmin Gallery featuring an eclectic mix of artists like Ivan Navarro (above), Kenny Scharf, Walton Ford, David LaChapelle, Erik Parker, and more. In particular, we enjoyed the special section from Navarro which included a set of optical illusion-based works from the Impenetrable series (made from fluorescent lights, resin, mirror) that mesmerized viewers as they peered down into the “depths.” Discuss Basel Week Miami here.

Upcoming: Robert Lazzarini – (damage) @ Marlborough Gallery (Chelsea)

This Thursday (January 10th), the Marlborough Gallery in Chelsea will be hosting the opening of Robert Lazzarini newest solo – (damage). The New York-based sculptor is known for his mind-bending works that take everyday objects and distorts them, leading the viewer to try to wrap their brain and eyes around the creation – oftentimes failing. For this exhibition, it sounds like Lazzarini will be twisting a window (above), safe, chain-linked fence, liquor sign, padlock, and motel door to disorient the audience, evoking an unsettling reaction.

Streets: Slinkachu (Russia)

It appears cold weather hasn’t deterred the skills and intentions of street miniaturist Slinkachu. The London-based artist continues to hit up major metropolitan areas around the world (the theme of his last solo show) – this time in Gorky Park (Moscow, Russia). Looks like his tiny people sculptures should watch out for giants aka humans. Discuss Slinkachu here.

Coming up on the 12th, the solo at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery from Haroshi that we shared news with you earlier will be accompanied by a new body of work from Aakash Nihalani. Both artists share a three-dimensionality to their aesthetic so it should be an interesting pairing. Building on his successful showing there in 2011 (covered), Japanese artist Haroshi will be returning to the Jonathan LeVine Gallery for another solo show (opening January 12th). Known for his increasingly complex sculptural works created from skateboards, he’ll be bringing a series of pieces with him collectively entitled Virtual Reality.
