Openings: John Chamberlain @ Pace Gallery

We recently went by Pace Gallery to see sculptor John Chamberlain’s 13th and final solo with the gallery (he recently left to become represented by Gagosian). Chamberlain has made his 50-year career by creating large-scale painted metal sculptures—typically out of car parts—which bring to mind three-dimensional abstract expressionist paintings. His current exhibition with Pace consists of more than a dozen such sculptures from the 1980s through the 2000s and is showing through July 1. Take a look at images from the show, after the jump.

Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Trophies” @ PRISM

Last night, PRISM filled its spacious gallery rooms with Trophies, the fourth in a series of shows from Ryan McGinness. As with the other Los Angeles exhibitions we have already covered (Michael Kohn & Country Club), this showing centered around a theme – gold sculptural pieces based on his Women series or works. Along with some wall murals, these 3-dimensional representations from the NY-based artist are taken from his deconstruction of the female form. More opening pics after the jump from Brandon Shigeta.

Coming up this Sunday, May 29th, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) will open their doors to a major retrospective exploring the full range of Tim Burton’s creative career, not only as a director but an artist, illustrator, photographer, and writer. Almost a year since images first leaked on the Wood Companion, KAWS appears to be ready to give an official drop to the Karimoku Companion, a more fine art spin akin to the bronze iterations of his signature mascot. The major retrospective of work by Tracey Emin, Love is What You Want, is currently on at London’s Hayward Gallery at Southbank Centre. A show that closed just last weekend at the Jealous Gallery in London was a collection of sculptures that might not be for the faint of heart. Broken (previewed), from Jessica Harrison, is comprised of a series of classic delicate figurines common in the UK but with a gory twist. On Thursday 12 May, AM attended the opening of the Ai Weiwei exhibition at Lisson Gallery (previewed), spread across both of its spaces on Bell Street in West London. The wide selection of work on display — produced over the last six years and agreed with the artist at the beginning of 2011 — does well to illustrate the playful, evocative and provocative nature of the Ai’s output. Anish Kapoor – “Leviathan” @ Grand Palais (Paris)

Anish Kapoor, who recently returned to India to open his first solo exhibition there, has now traveled to Paris, the site of his first ever exhibition 30 years ago, to unveil Leviathan. The 35 meter tall work made from PVC is 13,500 square meters when inflated, forming a cathedral-like space inside (which viewers can enter) creating the illusion of being inside a giant whale. Black Rat Projects in London recently hosted shooting@earth, a three-day event running from 5 to 7 May which launched @earth, the new photo-essay by Peter Kennard, assisted by Tarek Salhany.
