Some exciting news for Yoshitomo Nara fans out there yesterday as the NY Times announced that on August 9th, a pair of 12-foot-high fiberglass Nara dogs will be placed on the Upper East Side (one across from the entrance to the Asia Society at 725 Park Avenue, at 70th Street, and the other at 67th Street and Park Avenue just in front of the Park Avenue Armory) The Asia Society will be hosting a major retrospective with the famous Japanese pop artist entitled “Yoshitomo Nara: […]

A “Bunny Boy” sculpture? Hell yes please! We can’t wait to see what Faile (featured) has up their sleeves for their fans in Portugal. Basel Week Switzerland ’10: Volta6

The last fair we attended while in Switzerland was Volta6, and although it was way across town from Art Basel (covered, part 1 and 2) and Scope (covered), in a somewhat industrial part of the city, we were glad we made the trek. Unlike VoltaNY (covered), Volta6 was not focused on single-artist booths, so the smaller fair offered visitors a large range of interesting emerging artists.

Part of the fun of going to the big art fairs like Art Basel is also going to all the satellite fairs, and one of our favorites is always Scope. LACMA Purchases Tony Smith “Smoke” Sculpture

Those who have visited LACMA the past couple of years have seen and walked around Tony Smith’s monumental sculpture Smoke. The space that it inhabits in the Ahmanson Pavilion was actually redesigned (by Renzo Piano) specifically for the work. It would be unimaginable to think of the museum without the piece. It looks like Scott Radke (interviewed) has taken time from his busy schedule recently to sculpt this new piece with his signature mix of the the whimsical yet grotesque. He also recently worked on some marionettes for the Alice in Wonderland movie as well as creating a cluster of pieces for the Thinkspace “Picks of the Harvest” show (covered) during the Culver City artwalk.
