Urban Outfitters – $10 Balloon Dog Figure

Looks like Urban Outfitters is at it again.  This time, they are selling a very familiar looking dog figure that looks like one originally created by one of the biggest names in contemporary art.  Neither are strangers to lawsuits, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.  In the meantime, unless you have an eight-figure art budget, this may be the most affordable way to get one of these shiny pups into your house – but you may want to hurry.  No [...]

Openings: AJ Fosik – “Time Kills All Gods” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Opening along side Josh Keyes at Jonathan Levine was sculptural artist AJ Fosik. The show entitled Time Kills All Gods is a tour de force as AJ brings the hammer with this latest endeavor. We’ve long been impressed at his creative wood and metal workings that depict unique animals, but this time he ups the ante with a serious boost of imaginative mythical creatures while tackling the ideas of religion and the worship of false idols. Preview: Damien Hirst – “Legend” & “Myth” @ Chatsworth House

Currently on view at the Chatsworth House grounds in the UK through October 31st is the annual Sotheby’s Beyond Limits sculpture exhibition. Included in this year’s showing are two new works from Damien Hirst entitled Legend and Myth, which are his dissected portrayals of a winged horse and a unicorn. This new series of work appears to be an extension of his signature formaldehyde animals, with a focus now on mythical creatures. The sculptures are up for sale and range from the 1930s to the [...]

Openings: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Picking Up Where We Left Off” @ LeBasse Projects – Culver City

This past Saturday, LeBasse Projects in Culver City debuted Yoskay Yamamoto’s (interviewed) new solo exhibition. Entitled Picking Up Where We Left Off, this most recent work by the L.A.-based artist continues to show a great sense of artistry that he’s been building upon during the last few years. Combining both paintings and sculptures, the work on display clearly shows the effort and detail-oriented approach that the artist took forth during the process leading up to his show. This time around, Yamamoto focused on both his Japanese [...]

Openings: Korin Faught & Joey Remmers – “Voices of the Lake” & “Sheep’s Clothing” @ Corey Helford Gallery

After visiting Korin Faught’s studio a few days ago (here), we finally got to see the unveiling of her new work on the walls of Corey Helford Gallery. Titled Voices of the Lake, Faught continues to use the theme of reflections and dual imagery in her paintings. This time however, her work features water as a visual motif to explore the hidden and elusive qualities of her subjects. The dark and white colors draping against wooden canvas and the smallest of details on any given [...]

Openings: Christiaan Nagel @ Rich Mix

Last week, Londoners discovered an infestation of mushrooms at the Rich Mix showspace with the culprit being artist Christiaan Nagel. If you remember, we first introduced you to his street fungi back in January – colorful constructs of polyurethane, fiber glass, and stainless steel which he installed strategically on top of buildings and roofs mostly in the East End. Presented by Street Art London, the show which brought some of Nagel’s signature creations indoors was certainly well received by the packed crowd. More opening pics after [...]

AM recently caught Aaron Young’s New York Solo Built Tough at Bortolami Gallery. The show was a departure from the motorcycle etchings we typically see by Young as he tackled the motif of America and its symbols with new body of works that included sculptures, paintings, and silkscreens. Opening alongside Jen Lobo this Saturday night at Thinkspace, is the Ohio-based Scott Radke (interviewed). Featuring over two dozen pieces from the soulful sculptor, by far the most ever in one location, Burlap is a cant-miss show for fans of his beautifully grotesque works. As indicated by the title of the exhibition, many of these new sculptural pieces feature the incorporation of the specific fabric in the work, adding a nice new texture. Openings: FriendsWithYou – “:)” @ The Hole Gallery

Several nights ago, AM attended the opening of FriendsWithYou’s “:)” show at the new location of The Hole Gallery. Neither the sweltering heat nor the torrential downpours from the flash thunderstorms could keep the masses of fans away that packed the house to see the first ever New York solo exhibition from the colorful Miami duo Sam Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III who combine their collective happy vibes to form FWY.  The pieces exhibited were as intricate as they were colorful and the work was [...]
