Openings: John Brophy – “Breaking The Spell” & Femke Hiemstra – “The Timid Cabbage” Book Release @ Roq La Rue

While most were focused on the art bonanza in Miami, Roq La Rue favorites John Brophy and Femke Hiemstra, shared an open with new works at the Seattle gallery. John Brophy continues to hone his craft, mixing science symbology with religious iconography in Breaking The Spell. Added to the mix this time around are a few individual themes, like the world’s water supply in Oasis, and the companies that produce supergerms, which are literally slapped across a mesmerizing face in Birth of the Gram-Negative Venus. […]

Openings: Marco Mazzoni – “Naturama” & Lindsey Carr – “La Petite Singerie” @ Roq La Rue Gallery

There is an old saying that the window to your soul is through the eyes. Marco Mazonni has capatilized on this, by excluding them from his brilliant color pencil drawings. The exclusion mystifies and intrigues, while the surrounding plants, flowers, and familiar animals try to ease our reactions.  Naturama features three larger works and a bounty of smaller pieces on moleskin paper, giving us a detailed look into Mazzoni’s animal kingdom. Several of the smaller pieces feature a monotone palette, with a ball-point pen replacing the usual colored pencils. Mimicking portraits […]

Openings: Mary Iverson – “Sunk” @ Davidson Galleries

AM recently visited Mary Iverson in her studio leading up to the open of her Sunk exhibition. With the work complete, it was time to take it to the masses at Davidson Galleries in Seattle. The large landscapes filled the space with nature, but the veil of over-population and consumerism permeated the scenes as etched lines and shipping containers. There are also some smaller mixed media pieces which tackled the climate change topic and the inevitable rise of the worlds oceans. To cap it off, […]

Studio Visit / Previews: Mary Iverson – “Sunk” @ Davidson Galleries

We recently visited Mary Iverson’s studio as she finished up works for her Sunk exhibition, opening on November 7th at the Davidson Galleries in Seattle. After receiving an art grant, Mary traveled to Yosemite National Park in order to gain some source material for her wonderful landscape paintings. In addition to the photographs she takes for reference, she also takes the opportunity to paint at location with water colors. These smaller pieces are most dear to her heart since they were created while surrounded by […]

Previews: Marco Mazzoni – “Naturama” @ Roq La Rue

On November 7th, Marco Mazzoni is presenting his newest body of work alongside Lindsey Carr at the Roq La Rue gallery in Seattle. The works from the Naturama show are focused on the rituals of struggle between animals in the wild, and the impossibility of harmony in nature. Known for his surreal images, mostly showing parts of wildlife in strange interactions or even symbiosis, the Italian artist has prepared another series of such drawings and paintings for this show. While looking beautiful and calming, these works actually show those harsh moments in which nature […]

Openings: Kyle Jorgensen – “Kinetic Theories” @ LxWxH

Coinciding with the Georgetown neighborhood art walk, Seattle gallery Length/Width/Height opened its doors to host an exhibition by Salt Lake City resident Kyle Jorgensen, titled Kinetic Theories. With a wonderful color palette, and some glitter as well, geometric patterns ebb and flow the same way our wants and needs evolve over time. Much like the depicted icebergs go through drastic and complete transformations throughout their existence, our own lives are paralleled with changes coming both from within, and from outside influences. Kinetic Theories can be seen until […]

Openings: Laurie Lee Brom, Ransom & Mitchell, and Sail @ Roq la Rue

Not to be outdone after last month’s Baxter Collection show, art was once again packed to the rafters at Roq la Rue for the first show of fall, or as it has been dubbed, Roqtober! In her first solo gallery show, titled Moonlight, Magnolias, and Madness, Laurie Lee Brom brings us her soft touch while strolling through a moonlit bayou. Hints of fantasy abound as insects and animals provide whimsical interactions with their female subjects. Several of Laurie’s family and friends were at the opening, including […]

Studio Visit / Previews: Sail – “Dead Language” @ Roq La Rue

This author had the pleasure of interviewing Sail in 2012 for his personal blog, but a lot has changed for the Seattle based artist since then. Shortly after his personal website launched in late 2012, he caught the eye of Kirsten Anderson, owner and curator of Roq la Rue. He soon found his name on the artist list for the I’ll Love You Until the End of the World group show. His work was well received, and after ThreeA Publishing released his book in their GOYA series, […]
