Streets: Aryz x SAN Chapel Mural (Spain)

Last month in Zaragoza, Spain, Aryz and his friend SAN (Daniel Muñoz) painted the chapel of an old psychiatric hospital for Festival Asalto. Covering the exterior of the building with their distinctive imagery, the two spanish artists skillfully worked around all the architectural details while creating an intriguing juxtaposition between the new and old world. Streets: David Shrigley – “Really Good” // Fourth Plinth (London)

At the end of last month, David Shrigley revealed his public art commission standing on the Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square. Entitled Really Good, the seven-meter-high bronze piece featuring an extra long thumbs up was sand cast in 50 pieces over 9 months. The British artist hopes that this 11th sculpture for the long running arts program will become a “self-fulfilling prophecy – that things considered bad, such as the economy, the weather and society will benefit from a change of consensus towards positivity.” Photos via It’s […]

With this year’s Murals In The Market from 1xRUN in full swing, photos of the new public art are starting to be shared all over the interwebs. One of the pieces that grabbed our attention was this new wall painted by 1010 entitled Abyss. For this year’s Life Is Beautiful arts and music festival, JUSTKIDS / Charlotte Dutoit once again put together a worthy roster to add their unique talents to the outdoor vistas of downtown Las Vegas. Streets: Bezt // Etam Cru – “The Sleeping Knight” (Las Vegas)

Last week in Las Vegas, Bezt from Etam Cru painted a lovely new mural entitled The Sleeping Knight for the Life Is Beautiful Festival. Curated by JUSTKIDS, artists from all over the world came to leave their mark on Sin City including one half of the Polish street art duo. Painting a boy asleep in church juxtaposed by the stain glass image of a knight in armor slaying a dragon, one can almost imagine the dream he must be having. Discuss Etam Cru here. Streets: Cleon Peterson // Nuit Blanche Paris @ Eiffel Tower

Following in the footsteps of Shepard Fairey (featured) of creating art at the Eiffel Tower (covered), Cleon Peterson has done something Mr. Obey has never had the opportunity to do – painting the first mural ever directly below the famed monument. Created for this year’s Nuit Blanche in Paris (organized by Palais de Tokyo), the piece is entitled Endless Sleep, a reference to the famous late-night cultural festival. The circular piece features the Los Angeles-based artist’s signature figures inspired by Greco-Roman frescos sans the usual provocative imagery. Discuss Cleon Peterson here.

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, Croatia, recently hosted Isaac Cordal as the next artist to participate in their Spajalica public art project. The Galician artist spent over a week in the coastal town working on a series of installations that continue his previous work. Inspired by the city’s rich industrial and cultural heritage, Cordal cleverly used the aged buildings and facades as backdrop for his recognizable work. Recently in Kiev, Liqen painted a stunning large-scale mural on the side of a residential building on Bratislavskaya Street. Originally asked by the curators of the event to paint imagery that opposed the war, the Spanish artist had planned something a little more provocative but ultimately scaled things back to this just as amazing portrait of a titan. Over the weekend, Ai Weiwei unveiled a provocative new installation on the facade of Palazzo Strozzi in Florence which continues his commentary on the current refugee crisis in Europe. Entitled Reframe, the Chinese artist’s latest public work will features 22 life rafts attached to the historic building’s windows, a striking critique of the handling of the humanitarian crisis. A few weeks ago, MTO visited the Ukrainian capital to take part in the ongoing Art United Us (see our coverage of other murals) project curated by Iryna Kanishcheva and Geo Leros. During his stay, he painted a large elaborate mural inspired by the unprecedented hack of Ukraine’s power grid last December.
