Recap: POW! WOW! Hawaii 2018

A couple months ago, the 2018 edition of the POW! WOW! Hawaii was held on the island of Oahu, a week long annual event that celebrates culture, music and art. As always, the focus for us is the action that happens on the streets of Kaka’ako as local and international artists gather to paint live murals. Streets: Pejac – (New York) – Part II

After sharing one of the pieces yesterday that Pejac painted while in New York recently, we now have photos of the other brilliant piece he created in Bushwick (27 Scott Ave). Entitled Fossil, the mural really shows off the skills of the Spanish artist in creating optical illusions. While in Asia for back to back openings in Japan (covered) and Hong Kong (covered), KAWS also had a project he was working on in Los Angeles. Rising up high in its new home in Silicone Beach, the Brooklyn-based artist’s newest sculptural BFF statue now stands tall in front of a parking structure in Playa Vista. Recently visiting New York City for the first time, Pejac took the opportunity to paint a couple murals that spoke to the city’s environmental impact, an issue that often plays a key role in his work. Starting a few days ago, passerbys of some of London’s ITV buildings were treated to an unsettling sight if their eyes lifted to the sky. What appeared to be 84 men, standing on the edge the rooftops as if about to jump, were installed by Mark Jenkins (interviewed) and collaborator Sandra Fernandez as part of a campaign being run by the Campaign against Living Miserably, or CALM. Recently in India, Aaron Li-Hill (interviewed) painted a wall in New Delhi entitled Nature’s Arch and Visions of Altered Landscapes. Recently in the La Punta area just outside of Valencia, Spain, a group of street artists got together to help the local population protest the actions of the port authority and the local government have taken since 2001. Because of their focus on urban development, locales were forced to move into social housing only 100’s of meters from their old homes and gardens. Taking advantage of his time in New York while there to paint the Houston & Bowery wall (covered), Banksy continued to put his stencil skills to work around town (also see Clock Rat). Taking place in the middle of March every year in Valencia is the Las Fallas Festival (or Festival of Fire) which has evolved from the feast day for St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters into a five day extravaganza. The highlight of the event is the creation and destruction of a fallas (or ninots), one of which this year was designed by Spanish artist Okuda. The 25m high sculptural piece entitled Universal Equilibrium features his signature vibrant color palette as well as his recognizable prismatic patterns. […]
